8 Count Boxing: Welterweight Mike Alvarado Added To “El Bravo” Fight Card

ByBoxing Press 20/08/2007

Popular welterweight prospect Mike Alvarado puts his undefeated record on the line as he returns to Chicago for his third straight fight this Friday night, August 24 at the Congress Theater against Mexican prospect Jorge Alberto Padilla.

The Alvarado/Padilla ten round bout is featured at “El Bravo,” another action packed evening of world class professional boxing presented by Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productions.

A native of Denver, Colorado, the 27 year old Alvarado, 17-0 (11 KO’s), is a rising star in the highly competitive welterweight division. He has impressed Chicagoland crowds in his last two fights with a crushing knockout of Francisco Campos on June 8 and a terrific win in his battle with Carlos Molina on February 16.

Said ESPN’s Dan Rafael about the Campos knockout, “Prospect Alvarado did what he was supposed to do: score a spectacular knockout. Alvarado took it right to Campos. He was landing excellent combinations in the second round and was firing punches with Campos trapped along the ropes. Finally, Alvarado uncorked a sweet left hook to the chin. Good night.”

An amateur champion in his native Mexico, Jorge Alberto Padilla’s four year career includes terrific battles with prospects such as Timothy Bradley, Dominic Camarena, Herman Ngoudjo and Dominick Chavez. Nine months ago his brewing battle with highly regarded Americos Santos was stopped on cuts in the third round resulting in a technical draw.

The slick boxing Padilla brings a record of 7-3-3 into his bout with Alvarado. His ESPN televised bout with fellow prospect Camerena in 2005 was considered by some at ringside to be a hometown decision taken from him.

The full “El Bravo” fight card is as follows;

Tavoris Cloud vs. Jose Luis Herrera, ten rounds, light heavyweights
Guadalupe Rosales vs. Marcos Licona, ten rounds, super featherweights
Mike Alvarado vs. Jorge Padilla, ten rounds, welterweights
Deividas Nekrasas vs. Dustin Hendrick, four rounds, cruiserweights
Johnny Suarez vs. Eric Clinton, four rounds, middleweights
Bolivar Farfan vs. Nick Montalvo, four rounds, super middleweights

Tickets, starting at $30 for “El Bravo” can be purchased in advance by calling the 8 Count Productions office at 312-226-5800. Doors will open at 5:30pm with the first bell at 6:30pm.

The Congress Theater is conveniently located minutes from downtown Chicago at 2135 N. Milwaukee, just one mile west of the Kennedy Expressway by way of the Armitage Ave. exit.

The open to the public weigh in takes place on at 7pm Thursday, August 23 at the terrific Chicago Mexican seafood restaurant “El Veneo” located on the Southwest Side at 6651 S. Pulaski. Fans are encouraged to attend and greet the fighters.

“El Bravo” is presented by Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productions and Bob Arum’s Top Rank Incorporated along with TCF Bank and Tecate Beer. The Solo Boxeo broadcast will be viewed in more than 42 US markets and 70 foreign countries.

The Master of Ceremonies for “El Bravo” will be the internationally recognized voice of Latino boxing, Lupe Contreras.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
