Russia’s top light welter was in action last night in at the Yubileyny Arena in Yugorsk as WBO Asia Pacific Light Welter titlist Sergey Sorokin topped multi-weight super journeyman Emanuel Augustus over twelve rounds.
28 year old Sorokin had previously only lost to future IBF Light Welter kingpin Juan Urango in 2004 after taking too much of a step up from the domestic competition he had been facing up to that point.
But by the time he’d faced Augustus last night, Sorokin had already banked wins against Joel Mayo and Victor Hugo Castro in 2006 as well as Michael Muya and Ante Bilic earlier this year, and was much better prepared to face someone with the experience of Augustus.
Over the course of his sixty fight career, 32 year old Augustus had faced a laundry list of top lightweights and light welters such as Floyd Mayweather, Leonard Dorin, Leavander Johnson and Micky Ward and holds wins over Ivan Robinson, Jon Thaxton, Carlos Vilches, Alex Trujillo, Ray Oliviera and Courtney Burton.
But the Brownsville, Texas resident couldn’t turn the spoiler trick in Russia as his long experience wasn’t enough to overcome the youth and stamina of Sorokin, who decisioned Augustus by scores of 118-110 on all three cards to improve to 26-1-1 (18).
Augustus drops to 35-29-6 (18).
