Boxing In South America: Resultados Del Fin De Semana

It was a good weekend in South America, so let’s get to it with a round up of what went on in Argentina as WBO Flyweight Champ Omar Andres “The Huracan” Narvaes, 25-0-2 (16), retained his belt for the eleventh time with a stoppage of overmatched Nicaraguan import Marlon Marquez, 11-3 (4), on Friday at Gimnasio Municipal Number 1 in Trelew.

As expected, Narvaes’ busy southpaw style and long big fight experience were simply too much for the ex-WBO Latino titlist Marquez, who was finished by the fourth round.

Also on Friday, iron chinned defensive master and South American Lightweight Champion Aldo Rios, 43-4 (10), kept his crown with a twelve round decision over Sante Fe campaigner Diego Martin Alzugaray, 21-15-4 (3), at Club Independiente in Rios’ hometown of Neuquen.

33 year old Rios has only lost to such top men as Stevie Johnston, Artur Grigorian and Isaac Hlatshwayo in their primes during world title fights and was only ever stopped when moving up to light welter and falling to two-weight world champion Ricky Hatton in 2003.

In other action at Club Independiente, welter Hector David Salvida, 22-1 (17), bounced back from losing the WBO Latino title with a third round stoppage of Buenos Aires based trial horse Adolfo Dionisio Rios, 9-31-2 (4).

On Saturday at Estadio UPCN in Buenos Aires, WBO Latino Light Middle kingpin Luciano Leonel Cuello, 19-0 (9), dropped challenger Americo Rodolfo Sagania, 14-2 (7), in the first enroute to posting a twelve round unanimous decision win.

In Brazil on Saturday, Duda “The Chameleon” Yankovich, 10-0 (5), of Sao Paolo outpointed Colombia’s Liliana “Tigress” Palmera, 13-6-2 (9), to retain her WIBA Light Welter belt for the third time.

In other Saturday action, at the Estadio Palacio Penarol in Mntevideo, Uruguay, southpaw Caril Herrera, 21-0 (13), stayed perfect with a first round KO of Nelson Daniel Monte, 13-5-3 (7), to retain the WBC Latino Super Flyweight crown for the third time.
