Star Boxing: Sensational Slugfest At The Paradise

ByBoxing Press 14/11/2007

Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing hosted a tremendous night of fights at the Utopia Paradise Theatre in the Bronx Friday night.

Jr. Lightweights Francisco Lorenzo and Guadalupe Rosales waged war from the first bell and the action was frenzied throughout as both fighters took turns pummeling each other round after round with little to separate the combatants. The tenth round was fast and furious and had the near capacity crowd on its feet urging on each fighter.

After all was said and done, Lorenzo pulled off the upset over the WBC ranked sixth Rosales, with scores of 96-94 twice and 97-93. Lorenzo improves his record to 30-4, 14KO’s and Rosales drops to 25-2, 15KO’s.

The semi final eight rounder saw highly touted Jr. Lightweight Argenis Mendez improve to 9- 0, 6KO’s with a wide margin victory over a game Jorge Ruiz 5-3- 1. Mendez controlled the action dropping his opponent three times but Ruiz gamely hung in there to hear the final bell.

Star Boxing’s heavyweight contender ( WBA #14) Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson, improved his record to 17-0- 1, 5KO’s with a shut out victory over Andrew Greeley 13-9-2, 7KO’s Johnson displayed a lightening quick jab and worked the body with precise and hard combinations. Johnson was a late addition to the card but showed that he is always ready to answer the call when the bell rings!

Some of the top young talent on the east coast was featured on the under card, this up and coming fighters got to showcase their skills in front of their loyal fans from all over the country.

Opening the show was debuting bantamweight Jorge Diaz who showed terrific hand speed and flashy combinations taking out Anolan Rigal 1-2- 1, 2:53 into the fourth round.

Newburgh, NY heavyweight Nagy Aguilar improved to 4-0, 2KO’s with a unanimous four-round decision win over an ever-trying Elfair McKnight 2-7-2. Aguilar had McKnight down twice.

Mike Ruiz 5-2, 4KO’s scored the knockout of the night with a vicious right hand to the chin of Henry White 2-2, 2KO’s which dropped White flat on his back as the referee immediately called a halt in the second round of the scheduled four round welterweight bout.

Featherweight Jonas Hernandez improved to 8-1, 2KO’s with a four round split decision over Leivi Brea 16-6, 8KO’s-the scores were 39-37 in favor of Brea and 40-36 39-37 in favor of Hernandez.

Lightweight Joseph Llovet 2-1, 1KO won a spirited unanimous decision victory over Bobby Campbell 2-5- 2, all three judges scored the bout 40-36.

Heavyweight Vaughn Parham 3-1, 3KO’s, rebounded from a knockout loss in his last fight with a devastating knockout of Doug Jewel 0-2 in a scheduled four round bout. After two competitive rounds, Parham closed the show with a one punch upper cut knockout mid- way through the third round.

Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing in association with Top Rank, PR Best Boxing and All Star Boxing promoted the show. Televised live on America’s number #1 Hispanic fight network Telefutura.
