Risum Boxing: “Golden Boy” Poulsen Faces Peter Buckley On November 28

Kim Poulsen, 5-1 (1), will take on almost legendary English journeyman, and former Midlands Area super featherweight champion, Peter ”The Professor“ Buckley on Wednesday, November 28, at the Cafe Royal in London. While the Danish prospect has only six bouts under his belt, Buckley has been in a professional ring no less than 289 times, and is very likely the most experienced active fighter in the world today.

Just to name a few, Buckley has fought such notables as former world champions Johnny Bredahl, “Prince” Naseem Hamed, Acelino Freitas, Lehonolo Ledwaba, Barry Jones, Duke McKenzie and Scott Harrison, as well as numerous European champions. He is also a former WBA Intercontinental title-challenger, loosing on points to Austrian Harald Geier.

Obviously it must be noted that the 38-year-old Buckley rarely wins these days, sporting a record of 31-247-11 (8), but he is an expert in giving young, up-and-coming boxers like the Dane a good scrap in what is almost certainly going to be a valuable learning-experience for his foe. And if Poulsen is not focused, Buckley will likely give him a hard time; in those 247 defeats, he has only been stopped ten times.

“We had some trouble finding the right opponent for Kim this time, so it was a relief when Buckley agreed to take the job, despite the fact that he has boxed as high as welterweight recently, while Kim hasn’t been higher than lightweight,” says manager Henrik Risum.

“Buckley is a very respected ‘opponent’ in England, and I am sure Kim will gain lots of valuable experience from going six rounds with him. He is not called ‘The Professor’ for nothing!”

Poulsen is, as always, looking forward to the bout, and likes the fact that he will fight someone with a recognisable name for the first time in the pros:
“I know I have to box smart against Buckley, because otherwise he could make me look bad, and of course it is a fight that I must win by all means.

“The extra weight might give him an advantage, but I have sparred with Allan Vester who is a welterweight, so I don’t expect it to give me any special problems. I feel good, and look forward to the challenge”, says the 20-year-old Poulsen.

Poulsen vs. Buckley will be contested over six rounds at a catch-weight of 64 kilos, and promoted by the Mayfair Sporting Club and Mickey Helliet in cooperation with Risum Boxing.
