Friday Night Boxing Roundup

Boxing is still in a post-holiday slump this weekend but there were a few good matchups last night in America with a lot of ladies lacing ’em up along with an important show in Florida.

At the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in the sunshine state, ex-IBF Middleweight title challenger Edison Miranda, 30-2 (26), continued his comeback as a super middle with an impressive third round KO of game but ultimately outgunned David Banks, 15-4-1 (2), who has now dropped three of his last four bouts.

On the undercard, Jean Pascal, 21-0 (14), survived a seventh round scare at the hands of opponent Omar Pittman, 15-4-1 (8), but the Montreal based super middle rallied to take a ten round unanimous decision.

Pascal’s stablemate, Sebastien Demers, 23-1 (9), a former world title challenger at middleweight, outpointed Thomas Brown, 11-3-1 (7), over eight rounds.

At the Viking Hotel in St. Louis, MO, Hollie Dunaway, 21-6 (10), bounced back from a loss to WBC Female Minimumweight Champ Carina Moreno last summer with a ten round victory over Sharon Gaines, 11-9 (3), to annex the vacant NABF Female Flyweight title.

The Morongo Casino in Cabazon, CA, saw undefeated super middle Sergio Mora, 20-0-1 (5), stop former world middleweight title challenger Rito Ruvalcaba, 32-9 (28), who was coming off a three year layoff, in the sixth.

Also on the bill, lightweight Vincente Escobedo, 16-1 (11), won his fifth straight bout with a solid ten round decision over Pascali Adorno, 19-7-2 (4), while 37 year old Puerto Rican journeyman Javier Cintron, 14-9-2 (10), pulled off a spoiler by putting the first loss on the record of bantamweight prospect Johnathan Arias, 13-1 (6), vis third round stoppage.

The Isleta Casino in Albuquerque, NM was the scene of Holly Holm’s, 20-1-2 (6), seventh round stoppage of Miriam Brakache, 5-6 (1). Holm is the top Women’s welter in the world and may have to step up to light middle to find a credible challenge.

On the undercard, welter Joseph Gomez, 14-1-1 (7), was pushed to the limit by Rudy Hernandez, 14-7-1 (5), but managed to pull out a split decision after eight rounds.

We close out this report at the Orleans in Las Vegas, where Layla McCarter, 28-13-5 (6), pulled off a big six round unanimous decision over Cindy Serrano, 15-2-1 (7), at super feather.
