We start off this week’s installment of Friday night at the fights in France and if you were in Martigues, the venue La Halle des Martigues was the place to be as stocky, Haitian born French Light Middleweight Champ Jimmy Colas, 23-4 (10), pounded his way to the European Union title by flooring Spain’s Miguel Angel Pena, 27-13-4 (10), three times enroute to a second round TKO victory.
The 27 year old Colas regains his old title after losing it to one of his former victims, Christophe Canclaux, in January of last year and hits a new high water mark in a career that has seen him challenge unsuccessfully for the full European crown against current WBO 154 lb kingpin Sergiy Dzinziruk and hand four previously undefeated fighters their first losses.
On the undercard, Mohammed Medjadji, 20-5 (4), regained the French Super Feather belt by stopping Karim Chakim, 12-8 (5), in the eighth frame and impressive novice Malik Bouziane, 7-0 (1), retained his French Bantamweight title with a ten round points decision over veteran Jean Marie Codet, 16-21-5 (7).
On over to The States, there were a couple of Europeans going at it at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT with France’s Ali Oubaali, 21-3 (17), coming off the canvas in the sixth to win his second fight in America by decisioning Britain’s Ashley Theophane, 20-3-1 (7), over ten rounds at light welter.
Also at Mohegan Sun, welterweight Delvin Rodriguez, 22-2-1 (13), handed Troy Browning, 20-1-1 (8), his first loss.
Nearby New Jersey saw some action as well, with a few Philadelphia fighters racking up the wins. At the Commerce Bank Art Center in Sewell, light middle Eric Mitchell, 21-4-1 (10), outpointed Edwin Vasquez, 22-12-2 (8), over ten frames and heavyweight Chazz Witherspoon, 22-0 (15), kept the victory train going with a fourth round finishing of Jonathan Haggler, 18-2 (13).
On the shore at The Showboat Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, USBA Middleweight titlist Lajuan Simon, 18-0-2 (9), retained his belt by ten round decision over Elco Garcia, 19-7 (9), Venezuelan light welter Patrick Lopez, 12-1 (10), stopped Jonathan Tubbs, 10-5-1 (3), in the fourth and spoiler Zeferino Albino, 3-4-1 (1), pulled off something of an upset by forcing a six tound draw upon previously unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Chuck “The Professor” Mussachio, 11-0-1 (5).
Next we hit Chicago, where light welter prospect Mike Alvarado, 20-0 (13), stayed perfect with a ten round handling of Jesus Rodriguez, 17-3 (5), at Cicero Stadium in Cicero, IL. Ex-IBO USBO Light Middle beltholder Freddy Cuevas, 26-9-1 (17), returned to action after a nearly two year layoff by outpointing Luis Hodge, 5-6 (3), over six sessions.
Heading south, we find ourselves at Gimnasio Alexis Arguello in Managua, Nicaragua where super feather Rene Gonzalez, 19-1 (14), produced his fourth consecutive stoppage with a four round KO of Armando Rojas, 9-8-5 (6). Also on the bill, featherweight Marlon Aquilar, 16-4 (12), decisioned Leopoldo Arrocha, 9-10-2 (6), over eight.
We finish up this Friday round-up across the globe at the Holland Beer Restaraunt in Bangkok, Thailand where IBF Pan-Pacific Featherweight Champ Fahsai Sakkreerin, 20-1 (8), added that organization’s super feather crown to his trophy case by knocking out Filipino fighter Van “Holyfield” Bantilan, 7-2-1 (4), and highly seasoned IBF Pan-Pacific Super Bantam boss Fahsan 3K Battery, 59-9-1 (35), stayed busy with a non-title points victory over Roldan Malinao, 3-13 (2).
