Newly crowned British super flyweight champion Chris Edwards makes his first title defense on March 28, 2008 at the Metrodome in Barnsley, England when he takes on English champion Andy Bell. With it’s clash of styles, this boxer vs. fighter pairing has all the makings of a mini-classic.
“I’ve worked hard and long to get this title and I don’t intend to see it slip away from me on my first defense,” said Edwards. “My ambition is to make the Lonsdale Belt my own, outright. For Bell to take the belt off me, I’d have to be carried out on my shield.”
The co-main event sees the all-action English bantam ruler Jamie McDonnel facing off against former Commonwealth flyweight champion Lee Haskins over ten rounds at super flyweight. In his most recent bout, McDonnel went to war with Edwards for the inaugural British super flyweight belt in December and was only turned back with a narrow split decision loss.
Lightning-fisted southpaw Haskins will be making his return following a competitive British bantamweight title bid against Ian Napa that ended on an arm injury for Haskins the seventh.
Chief support for the card sees a Central Area light middleweight title fight between Doncaster’s Jason Rushton and well supported Leeds fighter, Danny Reynolds. Once again, this fight has the making of an action packed thriller.
Exciting middleweight prospect Kevin Conception makes his first appearance on his new promotional contract under the Frank Maloney banner and is scheduled to appear along with super feather Gary Sykes, light middle Karl Chiverton and others soon to be announced.
