Yuriorkis Gamboa beat Darling Jimenez to win the vacant WBC international super featherweight championship. “El Ciclon de Guantanamo ” dominated most of the fight but was down in the fourth when Jimenez caught him with a left.
ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner said, “Gamboa is a complete fighter but tonight I was not happy with his performance. He was a little bit too arrogant and gave me a hard time.
“You must not forget that it was only his tenth pro-fight though. He has got to improve his defence but he will definitely be world champion one day. After all I am glad that he had to go the distance. That was an important experience for him.”
On the undercard, light middleweight Alfredo Angulo stopped Richard Gutierrez by TKO in the fifth to win the vacant WBO intercontinental championship.
Angulo started strong, dominating and winning the opening rounds. After a strong left hook, Gutierrez had the Mexican stumbling but Angulo fought back, chased Gutierrez through the ring and had the Colombian out on his feet so referee Tony Weeks stopped the bout at 2:48 in the 5th.
James Kirkland won the vacant NABO Light Middleweight Championship by stopping Eromosele Albert by TKO in the first. Albert came back to his feet after a bad first knockdown but didn’t recover from it. After the second knockdown, referee Joe Cortez stopped the bout immediately after only 66 seconds.
Super middle Dion Savage, 1-0 (1), from Las Vegas stopped Tim Taylor from Salt Lake City, UT in his pro debut by TKO after 1:05 in the first.
Super bantamweight Chris Avalos, 3-0-0 (2), from San Diego TKO’d Alvaro Muro, 4-8-0 (4), from Durango, Mexico in the first. The referee stopped the one-sided bout after the first knock-down after 1:36.
Lightweight Mickey Bey, 10-0-0 (6), from Cleveland decisioned Wilson Alcorro, 25-9-3 (17), from Miami. Bey dominated the fight from the first bell on and scored more and harder punches. But experienced Alcorro took all punches thrown at him and managed to stay on his feet for the whole ten round distance. The judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91, all in favour of still unbeaten Bey.
