Boxing In Argentina: Weekend Results

It was a big weekend in The Land of Silver and we start off last night in Rio Negro where South American Lightweight Champion Aldo Nazareno Rios, 45-4 (11), enjoyed a rare knockout win by crushing Sergio Daniel Ledesma, 23-14-1 (9), in the first round during a non-title fight at Polideportivo Municipal Stadium Number 2.

Rios, a former IBO Lightweight Champion, has enjoyed a tremendous career, falling short only to world champions Stevie Johnston, Artur Grigorian, Ricky Hatton, Isaac Hlatswayo since turning pro in 1995.

On the undercard, middleweight Billi “El Nino” Godoy, 11-0 (6), stayed perfect by knocking out Adrian Marcelo Nieva, 8-9-2 (3), in the third round.

At Club Tomas De Rocamora in Entre Rios, Argentine Light Welter titlist Cesar Rene Cuenca, 33-0 (1), stayed on track for a world title shot by posting a unanimous decision over Marcelo Martin Miranda, 11-11-3 (3), in a ten round non-title bout.

Also on the bill, domestic lightweight contender Leonardo Esteban “El Leon” Gonzalez, 14-0 (10), outpointed Sergio Daniel Galvan, 4-4 (0), over six.

Friday was jam-packed with action as Argentine Heavyweight Champ Fabio Eduardo Moli, 38-7 (24), dropped opponent Manuel Alberto Pucheta, 20-3 (14), twice in the first before Pucheta was disqualified later that round at Club Defensores De Villa Lujan in Tucuman.

At Club Deportivo Libertad in Sante Fe, heavy-handed Buenos Aires light welter Marcos Rene Maidana, 23-0 (22), banged out another opponent as Brazil’s Esmeraldo Jose De Silva, 11-2-1 (7), was crushed in the second.

24 year old Maidana won a WBA Light Welter Eliminator in December, 2006 by stopping Miguel Callist in the third but has yet to contend for the WBA belt, currently held by Andreas Kotelnik.

We finish up this report at Club Los Toritos in Buenos Aires, where Gonzalo Omar Basile, 33-4 (14), decisioned Claudio Carlos Roque Fernandez, 11-8 (6), for the Interim WBC Latino Heavyweight title.
