Mighty Moses Marches On

Moses Itauma continues to defy all traditional logic when it comes to the typical development process of a young heavyweight star in the making.

What he has done so far, just 13 fights in now, is truly remarkable.

As anticipated, in the event of him doing a speedy number of Dillian Whyte on Saturday, the storyline tends to shift and the focus moves to the supposed demise of the vanquished fighter, rather than just celebrating a special talent.

As the week progressed, more and more people were questioning the wisdom of thrusting Moses in against such a tough and seasoned operator, such as Dillian. Especially with the shape and conditioning he came in with.

Of course, all these voiced concerns get swept under the ring canvas after the event.

Nobody connected to Moses and his career is getting ahead of themselves. We know where we are at and what we are doing.

Nobody can tell me who Moses should be fighting next or what we should be doing. We have got the space and time to carefully examine all the potential options and we will make the right decisions for Moses’ career.

This is not to say that I am not captivated by what Moses is doing and how he is developing. I don’t think we have witnessed a progression like this before.

As I mentioned last week, the obvious comparison is a young Mike Tyson, but he was fed probably over 20 banker victories to prepare him for his assault on stardom. The tests being taken on by Moses right now are far more meaningful. Anthony Joshua didn’t turn pro until he was something like 24 following the Olympics, so there is no real similarity with him.

So the Moses journey is pretty unique and sports fans in Britain and across the world can get behind him and know that we are seeing the creation of a potentially great sporting icon.

Also on Saturday night, congratulations to Nick Ball for a successful third defence of his WBA world featherweight title. He didn’t have it easy against a very capable and ambitious opponent in Sam Goodman, but he got the job done and we can now start plotting his next move.

This coming Saturday in Altrincham, at the Ice Dome, we’ve got an absolute domestic cracker to look forward to between British and Commonwealth super lightweight champion Jack Rafferty and Mark Chamberlain.

The place will be bouncing as it is just a short hop from the home territory of Jack and Zak Miller, who is also heading up the card in another probable barnstormer against Leon Woodstock.

Jack is so deserving of an occasion like this. He has patiently built himself up, selling tickets on the non-TV circuit and got himself a reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

Now he is getting his fully deserved rewards. He is headlining close to home in a fight that any boxing fan will tell you is as close to certain as you can get to deliver the goods.

While Jack is on the ascent, Mark is looking to re-establish himself as the chosen one after he took his eye off the prize at Wembley Stadium against Josh Padley last year.

Mark was one win away from a world title fight, but it wasn’t to be and now he has shifted up a weight and is going again.

I believe we have got a thriller on our hands and you can watch it all happen on DAZN this Saturday.
