British Are Coming…….to Golden Boy Promotions.

ByBoxing Press 02/03/200502/03/2005

They come from the British Isles, brimming with talent and the desire to conquer the world in their respective weight classes. So it is with great pleasure that Golden Boy Promotions announces their strategic partnership with top British promoter Hennessy Sports to co-promote two of the UK’s brightest stars – top junior welterweight contender Junior Witter, and British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

Both Witter and Froch will be co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions when they appear in the United States. They are the first UK signings by the Los Angeles based promotional company.

“At Golden Boy Promotions we pride ourselves on providing boxing fans with the top talent the sport has to offer, whether they’re from the US, Mexico, the United Kingdom, or anywhere around the world,” said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya. “Junior Witter and Carl Froch are two future stars in the sport of boxing, and we want to make sure that fans in the United States get to see them in action as they fight their way to world championships.”

“I am very pleased to have Golden Boy Promotions as our co-promoter for Junior and Carl in the United States,” said Hennessy Sports President Mick Hennessy. “They are a first class organization and this is the perfect situation for us to expose two of our finest boxers in the sport’s largest market.”

Bradford, England’s Junior Witter (31-1-2, 19 KOs) is one of the UK’s finest exports, and on February 19, US fans got their chance to see him live for the first time when he decisioned tough contender Lovemore N’dou in a WBC title elimination bout on February 19 in Los Angeles, putting the Australian on the canvas twice – the first time N’dou had ever been down. A concussive puncher with either hand, “The Hitter” already holds the Commonwealth, European, and British titles at 140 pounds, and he would like nothing better than to add a world title to his trophy case in 2005. Unbeaten for almost five years, Witter had a 15-fight knockout streak broken by the 12 round win over N’dou, but his strong finish showed that the championship distance is of no concern to the Bradford bomber.

Carl Froch may only have 14 fights to his credit (all victories, with 11 knockouts), but he has made quite an impression on the UK boxing scene in his three year career, having already won British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles, and earning praise by many as the hottest prospect in world boxing. A native of Nottingham, England, the 27-year-old Froch showed that he can handle a 12 round battle when he decisioned Charles Adamu last March, but he also likes to take care of business early, as evidenced by his four first round knockouts, including a 2:10 destruction of Damon Hague last September.

Both fighters expect to be back in action this spring in bouts to be announced shortly.
