Vic Darchinyan picked up one of the best wins in his career by besting Mexico’s Jorge Arce in a barn burner to retain the WBC, WBA and IBF Super Flyweight titles at The Pond in Anaheim, CA.
The war of words between the pair had started long before the actual fight and the intensity in the ring matched the bad blood press buildup once the action started.
Arce made good on his promise to take the fight to southpaw Darchinyan but the Mexican firebrand’s defense wasn’t up to the task of handling the quick hands of the Australian resident.
Time and time again Arce came in to try and settle his differences with the champion on the inside but Darchinyan mostly picked off the challenger with hard shots to the body along with sharp uppercuts and hooks.
Arce showed a tremendous chin to take the punishment and he at times hammered Darchinyan right back, whipping in hurtful left hooks along with his own body assault.
But Darchinyan just had more ammo and could get it to the target faster, beating Arce to the punch and outworking him.
By the later rounds, Arce was starting to show the effects of the shelling and the bout was stopped after 11 frames due to the Los Mochis man having bad cuts.
With the win, Darchinyan improves to 32-1-1 (26) while Arce falls to 51-5-1 (39).
Lightweight Almazbek Raiymkulov, 27-2-1 (15), was looking to recapture the glory of his 2005 heyday but the 31 year old was outboxed by southpaw Mexican prospect Antonio DeMarco, 20-1-1 (14).
Raiymkulov, better known as “Kid Diamond”, chose not to answer the bell for the tenth round, claiming injury after having a bad ninth frame against the much taller DeMarco, who wins the vacant NABO title.
Light middleweight prospect Vanes Martirosyan, 23-0 (14), kept on track with a eight round UD over Billy Lyell, 18-7 (3), and heavyweight hopeful Travis Kauffman, 16-0 (13), rubbed out veteran Cliff Couser, 26-19-2 (14), in the first round.
