If fighting for the prestigious Ring Magazine and IBO Lightweight Championship belts weren’t enough, on February 28 at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz will also have the vacant WBA Lightweight Super Championship and WBO Lightweight Championship belts on the line in their highly anticipated showdown.
“The more championship belts for me, the better,” said Marquez. “I want to unify the lightweight division and I’m excited to have the opportunity to add two more titles to my collection on February 28th.”
“The WBA title was my first championship belt that I won after beating Lavka Sim in 2004 and I was also proud to win the WBO belt after beating Acelino Freitas, so to have the opportunity to get both of my titles back, as well as the Ring Magazine belt, it’s going to be a great night next weekend,” said Diaz.
The WBA and WBO titles were rendered vacant when Nate Campbell failed to make weight for his February 14 title defense against Ali Funeka.
Marquez vs. Diaz, a 12 round bout for the WBA, WBO, IBO and Ring Magazine Lightweight Championships and Chris John vs. Rocky Juarez, the 12 round co-main event for John’s WBA Featherweight Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and Southwest Airlines.
The world title bouts will take place on February 28 from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and will be televised live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing beginning at 10 pm ET / 7 pm PT.
Tickets for Marquez vs. Diaz, priced at $300, $150, $75, $50 and $25, are still available for purchase, online at www.ToyotaCenterTix.com, by phone at 1-866-4-HOU-TIX and at select Houston area Randalls locations. Tickets are also available at the Toyota Center Box Office.
