There was a good show north of the border on Friday as Orion Sports Management put on a bill at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario.
Former IBF Bantam title challenger Heriberto Ruiz, 41-7-2 (23), of Mexico captured the vacant IBF Intercontinental Super Bantam crown with a 12 round unanimous decision over Panamanian southpaw Mauricio Martinez, 35-9-1 (23).
The win earned Ruiz an IBF title eliminator in June at Casino Rama and the Los Mochis veteran will face former IBF titlist and local man Steve Molitor in June.
Ruiz has had a mercurial career since turning pro in 1994 and should prove to be a difficult test for “The Canadian Kid”, who will be attempting to comeback from a stoppage loss to current IBF Champ Celestino Caballero in November.
On the undercard, Brampton based Polish southpaw Grzegorz Kielsa, 9-0 (4), defended his Canadian Heavyweight title with an eighth round stoppage of Winnipeg’s Arthur Cook, 14-5-2 (5).
