Boxing In Australia: Kickett, Asiku, Onikeke Win On Kanwal Fight Card

There was a good show at Wyong Rugby League Club in Kanwal, NSW on Friday with some big names on the bill including William Kickett, Jackson Asiku and Fatai Onikeke.

Promising 22 year old super feather Kickett took another step on the road back from his shocking first round KO defeat to Ahmed Elomar last November by outboxing Filipino journeyman Roel Mangan, 13-11-1 (3), over four rounds.

Kickett, 15-1 (5), wrapped up his second consecutive victory by outpointing the Cebu City man 40-36 on all three scorecards.

The ex-WBO Asia Pacific and IBF Pan Pacific Youth super feather titlist had already defeated Gairy St. Clair, Vincente Martin Rodriguez and Tommy Browne before the Elomar loss but it remains to be seen if “Cool Willie” can return to his former rocketing career plane.

Former Commonwealth, Australian and WBO Asia Pacific featherweight titlist “Action” Jackson Asiku, 25-3 (13), also was on the show but had a tougher time of it than did Kickett.

Coming off an impressive stoppage victory over St. Clair for the vacant IBF Australasian super feather crown, Asiku
was expected to handily take care of Liverpool based Filipino lightweight Junmar Dulog, 5-17-2 (2).

But no one told Dulog, who had shared the ring with some of Australia’s best from featherweight to light welter over the last three years, and the seasoned 22 year old southpaw took the fight to Asiku.

By the time the smoke cleared in the four rounder, Asiku escaped defeat with a 39-37, 39-37 and 37-39 split decision win.

Blackburn based Nigerian light welter Fatai Onikeke, 23-3 (20), lived up to his “Kid Dynamite” nickname by pounding out another well experienced Liverpool boxer, Ariel Omongos, 8-16 (7), in the third frame of a scheduled four rounder.

A former Commonwealth and Nigerian welter champ, Onikeke had dropped down to light welter and captured the IBF Pan Pacfic belt but was coming off a disastrous outing against Somchai Nakbalee, who totally dominated Onikeke over 12 rounds, in October, 2007.

Having come into the contest three pounds overweight, Nakbalee was unable to win the IBF Pan Pacific title and Onikeke had been out of the ring ever since.
