David Benavidez Crushes Ramirez, Inoue Beats Nakatani & Walker Stops Eggington | Boxing Weekend Roundup
The weekend belonged to David Benavidez. Moving up and flattening Gilberto Ramirez inside six rounds was the kind of statement that changes conversations overnight. Elsewhere, Naoya Inoue and Junto Nakatani finally shared a ring in Tokyo, Conah Walker and Sam Eggington somehow managed to turn a boxing match into another brutal shootout, and there were solid title wins from Skye Nicolson and Tsendbaatar Erdenebat to round things off.
No shortage of talking points this week. Some expected, some not.
Benavidez vs Ramirez – Las Vegas – May 2
David Benavidez blasted through Gilberto Ramirez with a sixth-round stoppage to claim the cruiserweight title and make a serious statement at the weight. Ramirez came in bigger and heavier, but once Benavidez got rolling, the pace and pressure started breaking him apart.
The finish felt inevitable by the middle rounds. Benavidez was walking Ramirez down, punching in combinations and landing clean enough to force the stoppage in round six. Big moment for him, and honestly, probably the performance of the weekend.
Inoue vs Nakatani – Tokyo – May 4
Naoya Inoue retained his undisputed crown with a unanimous decision win over Junto Nakatani in the Tokyo super-fight everyone wanted to see. Nakatani had moments early and definitely wasn’t there just to survive, but Inoue gradually took over with cleaner work and sharper timing.
Over 12 rounds, Inoue simply looked like the more complete fighter. Not a blowout, but no real controversy either. Another huge win on an already ridiculous résumé.
Walker vs Eggington – Wolverhampton – May 2
Conah Walker stopped Sam Eggington in round 10 after another classic Eggington war that probably took years off everyone watching it.
Walker stayed composed through the chaos and eventually broke Eggington down late. Tough fight, hard rounds, plenty traded. Eggington never really does easy nights, and this was no different.
Fawaz Alabi outpointed his opponent over the distance to claim titles on the undercard in another important win for the unbeaten prospect.
Nicolson vs Turner – Melbourne – April 30
Skye Nicolson comfortably outpointed Mariah Turner over the scheduled distance in Melbourne. Sharp boxing, clean movement, and not much drama once Nicolson settled into rhythm.
Imtiaz Hussain edged Jake Hunt on points in a tighter fight underneath. Competitive stuff, but Hussain did enough to nick the decision.
Erdenebat vs Breedy – May 2
Tsendbaatar Erdenebat dominated Cobia Breedy over 10 rounds to pick up the WBC USA Silver title. Breedy hung in there, but Erdenebat controlled the fight from start to finish and barely lost momentum.
Solid step up passed. He’s clearly being moved with purpose now.
Benavidez stealing headlines was probably inevitable after that finish, but Inoue continuing to stack elite wins deserves just as much attention. Add in another unforgettable Sam Eggington tear-up and it ended up being one of those weekends where boxing gave you a bit of everything without wasting much time doing it.
