When Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn initially challenged Tomasz Adamek in 2007, he had a clear motive. While many fighters call out the best simply for publicity, Gunn had something else in mind: a good old-fashioned slug out.
“Styles make fights”, said Gunn, who holds the WBA NABA and WBC USNBC Cruiserweight titles.
“Gunn vs Adamek will be the Adamek-Briggs of the Cruiserweight division. Fans want to see good fights and all I know how to do is entertain.”
Since the day he made waves by calling out Adamek, Gunn was dreaming of a showdown with the gutsy Pole. Although logistics prevented a December 2007 fight, Gunn still had hope.
Last week, when fellow contender Matt Godfrey decided against taking on Adamek, his promoter Main Events contacted Gunn.
Gunn formally received an offer for his dream fight, which he said would be best billed as “The Garden State War”.
With the IBF title as something he had his mind set on for more than two years, Gunn didn’t think twice about the opportunity of a lifetime.
Gunn quickly signed to face Adamek, who holds a stellar 37-1 pro record with 25 KO’s. Globally recognized as the lineal Cruiserweight champion of the world, Adamek is a popular, fan friendly brawler with a strong following in New Jersey.
Gunn acknowledges the gargantuan task in front of him and knows he will have to take his training to another level to be fully prepared.
“The opportunity to fight the best in the world is not something many boxers get”, said Gunn, who boasts a pro ledger of 21-3-1 with 18 knockouts.
“I was training even before the fight was announced and already am in great shape. Come fight night, my conditioning will be the best of my career. I have learned from my setbacks and on July 11, you will see a new Bobby Gunn!”
The Gunn vs. Adamek bout will take place July 11 at The Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.
