Keyshawn Davis Misses Weight As Tempers Flare At Norfolk Weigh-In
Friday’s weigh-in in Norfolk turned messy for a couple of the headline names as both Keyshawn Davis and Brian Norman Jr came in heavy on their first attempts ahead of Saturday night’s Top Rank card at the Scope Arena.
The atmosphere definitely changed once the scales started causing problems. There was confidence, trash talk and a few tense moments on stage, especially once fighters started missing championship limits.
Main Event
Keyshawn Davis first weighed 140.2 lbs for his 12-round super lightweight main event against Nahir Albright, missing the limit and being stripped on the scales. Davis returned for a second attempt at 140.1 lbs but still failed to make weight, leaving himself with two hours to cut the remaining weight.
Albright had no issues at all, coming in comfortably at 137.7 lbs and looking relaxed throughout the face-off.
The Philadelphia fighter sounded confident afterwards too.
“Make weight and be professional. I’m coming home with the win, it’s my time,” said Albright.
Davis didn’t seem overly concerned by the situation and promised fireworks despite the controversy.
“I feel amazing. I’m gonna put on an unexpectable show and I’m gonna knock out Albright,” Davis said.
Even before the opening bell, this one suddenly feels a lot more heated than it already did.
Official Co-Main
Brian Norman Jr also had issues with the scales ahead of his 10-round welterweight bout against Josh Wagner.
Norman first weighed 148.4 lbs before returning lighter at 148.2 lbs, although still over the welterweight limit. Like Davis, he was given two hours to continue cutting weight.
Wagner officially came in at 147.7 lbs and clearly wasn’t impressed.
“Not making weight is the most disrespectful thing you can do in the sport. Everyone’s counting me out but I’m gonna shock the world. I’m ready to fight back and move whatever it takes. All you people calling me the underdog, just watch Saturday night,” Wagner said.
Norman’s interview was far shorter and less eventful. He joked that he just needed a quick bathroom break before returning to the scales and answered most questions with, “We’ll see tomorrow.”
Other Weigh-In Results
Kelvin Davis weighed 147.3 lbs for his 10-round welterweight fight with Peter Dobson, who came in at 147.5 lbs.
The face-off between the two got intense quickly, with plenty of verbal exchanges while family members from the crowd added to the noise. Neither fighter looked interested in backing away from the stage.
Yan Santana officially weighed 125.6 lbs ahead of his 10-round WBO NABO featherweight title fight against Cristian Cruz Chacon, who came in at 125.9 lbs.
Keon Davis hit the scales at 153.3 lbs for his six-round bout against Edwine Humaine, who weighed 155.4 lbs.
Dedrick Crocklem came in at 129.8 lbs ahead of his six-round super featherweight contest with Eric Howard, who weighed 131.2 lbs.
Closing Thoughts
The actual boxing still looks promising on paper, but the missed weights have added extra pressure onto two of the featured fights. Norfolk should still be loud on Saturday night, especially if Davis and Norman both return to make the limits in time.
