Amari Jones vs Vincenzo Gualtieri Preview: Golden Boy Brings Big Test To San Jose
Jones Gets His Biggest Opportunity Yet In Friday Night Main Event
Golden Boy’s Friday night card in San Jose suddenly feels a lot more important after confirmation that unbeaten middleweight Amari Jones will headline against former world champion Vincenzo Gualtieri in a 12-round IBF eliminator.
That changes the feel of the whole event a bit. This is no longer just another prospect showcase card. If Jones wins impressively, he moves straight into the serious world-title conversation at middleweight.
The event takes place at the SAP Center in San Jose and streams live worldwide on DAZN, with several unbeaten fighters and contenders trying to push themselves into bigger fights before the year is out.
Main Event
Amari Jones (16-0-0) has looked sharp throughout his rise so far, but Friday night is clearly the biggest step of his career. The unbeaten middleweight prospect faces Germany’s former world champion Vincenzo Gualtieri (25-1-1) in a fight that suddenly carries genuine pressure after being upgraded into an IBF eliminator.
Jones comes into the fight off back-to-back knockout wins and sounded completely convinced this is his moment.
“I train every fight like I’m fighting for a world title. I don’t cut corners,” said Jones during fight week. “Vincenzo has experience, but that’s all he has over me. I don’t feel like he’s better than me or more skilled than me. Friday night, I’m going to prove that.”
There’s definitely confidence there, but Jones also knows exactly what beating a former world champion would do for his career.
“There’s no better way to prove myself than against a former world champion,” Jones added. “People already believe in me, but now it’s time to solidify myself in this division and show that I deserve a world title shot.”
Jones also admitted headlining in front of Bay Area fans means a lot to him.
“It’s a blessing to headline in the Bay Area. I’ve been putting in all the work, coming off back-to-back knockouts, and I feel like I earned this opportunity.”
Still, Gualtieri is not just some faded former champion showing up for a payday. The German has experience, physical strength and enough patience to make things uncomfortable if Jones starts rushing.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to move forward and become a world champion again,” said Gualtieri.
The former IBF champion also made it clear he believes his experience at top level could become a factor once the fight settles in.
“I’ve fought a lot of champions and been in big fights before. Friday night, Amari is fighting someone who has already been there.”
Honestly, this is probably the kind of matchup that tells us more about Jones than any of his previous fights combined.
Co-Main / Key Fights
The co-feature sees unbeaten cruiserweight Robin Sirwan Safar (19-0-0) challenge Argentina’s Yamil Alberto Peralta (18-1-1) for the WBC Silver cruiserweight title.
Safar has been talking confidently all week and made it clear this is the type of opportunity he signed with Golden Boy to get.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” said Safar. “That’s one of the biggest reasons I signed with Golden Boy because I knew they could push me into these opportunities.”
The unbeaten cruiserweight also sounded emotional when discussing the sacrifices behind his rise.
“I’ve been doing this for 15 years. I sacrificed being away from my family overseas for this sport. This is what God put me on Earth to do, and on Friday night I’m going to make a statement.”
Safar has looked solid so far as a pro, but Peralta is experienced, awkward and making his U.S. debut with nothing to lose.
“Thank you everyone for being here,” said Peralta. “I took this fight because I’ve prepared for this moment for a long time. I’m ready to show people who I am on my path toward becoming a world champion.”
Safar, meanwhile, sounds like a man expecting to leave with the belt.
“That belt is motivation. I came here to take that belt.”
And if things go his way, he believes the finish could come before the final bell.
“I always come to fight. I show my boxing skills, my speed, my power, and usually I get the knockout. Maybe we get another one Friday night.”
At super flyweight, John Ramirez (16-1-0) returns against Argentina’s Lucas Emanuel Fernandez (14-4-2) over ten rounds.
Ramirez is still trying to rebuild after suffering the first loss of his career and this matchup feels important for confidence as much as rankings. Fernandez has enough experience to make things awkward if Ramirez loses concentration, but Ramirez should still have the sharper work overall if he settles early.
Middleweights Jordan Panthen (11-2-0) and Jean Rivera-Pacheco (10-2-0) meet in a ten-round clash for the WBA Intercontinental middleweight title.
This one could quietly turn into a really entertaining fight. Panthen is still developing, while Rivera-Pacheco feels like the type of opponent who’ll happily drag things into a rough, physical contest if given the chance.
Other Featured Fights
Darius Fulghum (14-1-1) faces Miami-based Yoanki Urrutia (17-2-0) in a ten-round super middleweight bout.
Fulghum admitted he went through a difficult period recently and believes the reset has helped him.
“I had a rough stretch in 2025 and 2026, and I knew I needed to reevaluate things,” said Fulghum. “I told Golden Boy I want to bring a belt back to them. The 168-pound division is wide open, and I need to give myself the best opportunity possible.”
He also believes relocating to California has improved him as a fighter.
“Being in California surrounded by great talent and great coaches has been huge for me. This year, I’m here to make statements.”
Fulghum is still frustrated by the loss to Bektemir Melikuziev and made no secret of it during fight week.
“That fight with Bektemir Melikuziev was a fight I still feel like I won, but I’m still learning and gaining experience. I know I’m capable of becoming a world champion, and we’re going to make that happen.”
Cruiserweight Tristan Kalkreuth (16-1-0) also returns against Mexico’s Marco Canedo (8-3-1) in a ten-rounder.
Kalkreuth spent part of fight week discussing balancing boxing with family life after recently becoming a father.
“I’m feeling good. Everything I’ve gone through in my career and everything my team and I have been working on — now it’s time to put it all together.”
He also thanked Golden Boy for giving him time away from the ring following the birth of his daughter.
“I believe in myself, and Golden Boy believes in me, too. It feels great to be back. I appreciate Golden Boy giving me the time to be with my wife and newborn daughter, but now it’s time to show people I’m one of the best cruiserweights in the world.”
“They grow up fast. At the end of the day, you still have to go in there and put on a show.”
“By going in there and being myself. I’ve gone through a lot these past few months with my daughter being born and balancing training, but I’m ready.”
Unbeaten flyweight Enkhmandakh Kharkhuu (7-0-0) opens the evening against Mexico’s Adrian Yair Ibarra Herrera (10-4-0) over eight rounds.
On the preliminary card, Fresno’s Jordan Fuentes (6-0-0) is scheduled for a six-round super flyweight fight against an opponent still to be announced.
Meanwhile, Jose Medrano Jr. (2-0-0) faces Anel Dudo (4-8-1) in a four-round super featherweight contest.
Closing Thoughts
This card has definitely improved on paper over the last few days. Jones vs Gualtieri being upgraded into an IBF eliminator gives the main event real meaning, while Safar vs Peralta and Ramirez vs Fernandez both feel competitive enough to keep things interesting throughout the night.
And if Jones delivers under the spotlight, don’t be surprised if people start mentioning his name around bigger middleweight fights very soon.
