Amanda Serrano Stops Hanson As Han Beats Holm Again At MVP 03
MVP 03 delivered plenty to talk about in El Paso. Amanda Serrano barely needed two rounds to take care of business, Stephanie Han edged Holly Holm once again in a fight that will have fans arguing for days, and the world title fights underneath were anything but routine.
The card was promoted as a double main event and both headline bouts ended up stealing attention for completely different reasons.
Amanda Serrano vs Cheyenne Hanson
Amanda Serrano retained her WBO World Featherweight title with a second-round stoppage of Cheyenne Hanson, improving her record to 49-4-1.
Hanson arrived in El Paso full of confidence after an outspoken fight week, but Serrano quickly reminded everyone why she remains one of the biggest names in the sport.
The champion was sharp from the opening bell and forced the stoppage at 2:25 of round two. Hanson never stopped trying, but the gap in experience and class became obvious very quickly.
Serrano moves to 49-4-1 while Hanson falls to 17-3-0.
Stephanie Han vs Holly Holm
Stephanie Han remained unbeaten after taking a majority decision over former world champion Holly Holm.
The judges scored the contest 96-94, 95-95 and 96-94 in Han’s favour after ten competitive rounds.
Holm finished strongly and there will undoubtedly be debate over the verdict, but Han did just enough on two cards to retain her title and improve to 13-0-0.
Holm drops to 34-4-3 following another frustratingly close defeat.
Other Title Fights
Lourdes Juarez retained her WBC World Light Flyweight title with a split decision victory over Yokasta Valle.
One judge favoured Valle 95-94, another gave Juarez the fight by the same score, while the deciding card came in a wide 98-91 for Juarez. Valle hitting the canvas in the tenth round proved costly in a fight decided by the narrowest of margins.
Juarez improves to 40-4-0 while Valle slips to 34-4-0.
Earlier in the evening, Desley Robinson made a statement by taking the IBF and WBO World Middleweight titles from Mary Spencer.
The judges scored it 99-91, 100-90 and 100-90 for Robinson, who completely controlled the contest over ten rounds.
Robinson leaves Texas with two world titles and a new record of 12-3-0. Spencer falls to 10-4-0.
Undercard Results
Yesica Nery Plata improved to 31-3-0 after outpointing Brook Sibrian over eight rounds by unanimous decision. Sibrian drops to 9-3-0.
Nazarena Romero moved to 15-1-2 with an eight-round unanimous decision victory over Maria Salinas, who falls to 27-15-6.
Alexander James Gueche stayed unbeaten at 12-0-0 after defeating Joshua Montoya by unanimous decision over eight rounds. Montoya drops to 7-5-2.
Miranda Reyes picked up an eight-round unanimous decision victory against Camilla Panatta. Reyes improves to 9-3-1 while Panatta falls to 8-4-1.
Opening the show, Elise Soto remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision win over Thalia Joseline Limon. Soto advances to 11-0-0 and Limon slips to 4-2-0.
Closing Thoughts
Serrano’s explosive stoppage was the moment everyone will remember, but Han’s narrow win over Holm is likely to generate the most debate.
Throw in Juarez surviving a serious test against Valle and Robinson’s dominant title-winning effort, and MVP 03 turned into a memorable night for women’s boxing in Texas.
