Josh Padley vs Aqib Fiaz Preview: European Title Defence
What started as a supporting attraction has suddenly become the headline act in Sheffield, and it’s a fight that feels well matched on paper. Josh Padley puts his European super featherweight title on the line against Aqib Fiaz in a clash between two fighters with plenty to prove. Padley arrives as the champion, but Fiaz has been chasing a night like this for years and now gets his shot under the DAZN lights.
It’s not the biggest card of the summer, but there are some interesting domestic matchups throughout the bill, along with a couple of unbeaten prospects looking to keep their momentum rolling.
Main Event: Josh Padley vs Aqib Fiaz
Josh Padley (18-1-0) makes the first defence of his European super featherweight title against Aqib Fiaz (14-1-0) over ten rounds.
Padley has gone from respected domestic operator to European champion in a relatively short space of time and now faces the challenge that often catches fighters out — defending the belt for the first time. Winning a title is one thing, keeping hold of it is another.
Fiaz comes into the fight with only one defeat on his record and has quietly rebuilt his position over the last few years. The Oldham man has always been regarded as a talented boxer, but opportunities at this level don’t come around forever.
The interesting part is that neither man is known for reckless aggression. This could turn into a tactical contest where small adjustments and work rate decide the outcome rather than one dramatic moment. Padley’s confidence should be sky high as champion, but Fiaz probably enters this fight believing the timing couldn’t be better.
If it becomes a close fight down the stretch, expect the champion’s experience in bigger nights to become a factor.
Co-Main Event
Ibrahim Nadim (16-1-0) takes on unbeaten Ibraheem Sulaimaan (10-0-0) in a ten-round super featherweight contest.
This one could easily steal the show. Nadim has already been tested as a professional and knows what it feels like to bounce back from setbacks. Sulaimaan brings an unbeaten record and the confidence that comes with never tasting defeat.
Records can sometimes be misleading, but this feels like a genuine step-up fight for both men. Somebody leaves Sheffield with a major boost to their career, while the other heads back to the drawing board.
Other Key Fights
Aaron Bowen (7-1-0) meets experienced campaigner Troy Coleman (15-4-1) at middleweight. Bowen is still looking to establish himself after suffering his first professional defeat, while Coleman has enough experience to make things awkward if he’s allowed to settle.
Heavyweight prospect Leo Atang (6-0-0) continues his development against Fouad Shaili (5-4-2). Atang has generated plenty of attention early in his career and every appearance adds another layer of expectation around him.
Undercard
Connor Mitchell (2-0-0) faces Jesus Carrasco (2-4-2) in a featherweight contest as the young prospect looks to move to 3-0.
Chris Mulunda (2-0-0) takes on durable middleweight Connor Goulding (6-12-0). Goulding has shared the ring with plenty of prospects and will be aiming to test Mulunda’s progress.
Final Thoughts
Padley versus Fiaz might not have been the original main event, but it has the ingredients for a very competitive British fight. Add in Nadim against Sulaimaan and a handful of promising prospects underneath, and Sheffield boxing fans should get a solid night’s action on DAZN.
