McDermott vs. Fury, Davies vs. Napa Sept. 11

On Friday, September 11, 2009 Frank Maloney Promotions return to kick off the new boxing season with a bang at The Brentwood Centre in Essex, England.

Topping the bill is a massive heavyweight collision between English champion John McDermott and headline grabbing giant Tyson Fury.

In what could turn out to be the fight of the year, seasoned vet McDermott, 25-5 (16), puts his belt at risk against surging goliath Fury, 7-0 (7), who has laid waste to all put before him during a young yet very explosive career.

The clash pits the experience of McDermott, who is coming off two narrow and very debatable losses to British champ Danny Williams over the past year, against the brash youthfulness of 21 year old Fury, who has fired up the boxing community with his confident boasts and attention-grabbing knockouts.

Hometown Essex hero “Big Bad” John has laughed off Fury’s pre-fight verbal salvos and relishes the chance to put the first holes in the record of the 6’9 tall power punching prospect.

It is perhaps the most intriguing match-up of 2009 in the British heavyweight division and a bout that guarantees fireworks.

Also on the card is the eagerly anticipated British bantamweight title clash between champion Gary Davies and former European king Ian Napa.

Davies, 9-2-1 (7), roared out of nowhere to take control of the division in the UK over the last eight months with KO’s of ex-British champ Martin Power and Welsh brawler Matthew Edmonds to capture the vacant British crown.

The 26 year old from the Liverpool suburb of St. Helens bounced back from two early disappointments and hasn’t lost a bout since 2005, stretching out his last four opponents in thrilling fashion.

However, Davies will truly step up to the big time when he meets the most experienced man of his career, Ian “Dappa” Napa.

The gloved wizard from Hackney rode a five fight win streak, all British or European title bouts, into his first Continental defense this past March but suffered a shock points loss to France’s Malik Bouziane.

Napa has called the loss of his European crown nothing more than an off night and to prove it has vowed to take Davies to school enroute to regaining his British title.

Former British light middleweight titlist Gary Woolcombe, 27-2 (10), has had to wait over two years to get a return bout against tricky Andrew Facey, 20-5-2 (6), and the South Londoner not only plans to avenge defeat but also to rip the English title from Facey’s grasp.

Another title contest is on tap on September 11 as flashy Ashley Sexton, 7-0 (3), challenges hardnosed ex- British and English super flyweight champion Andy Bell, 11-4 (3), for the vacant English flyweight strap in a bout that will also serve as a British title eliminator.

On the undercard, big hitting heavyweight Tom Dallas, 6-0 (4), makes his maiden voyage at the six round distance and Martin Power, 20-4 (8), continues to rebuild his career at bantam, also over six frames.

Set to appear in four rounders are light middleweight Martin Welsh, 1-0 (0), and middleweight debutante Tony Hill.
