Ex-Boxing Champ Israel Vasquez Makes Ring Return October 10

ByBoxing Press 18/09/2009

On Saturday, October 10, the much anticipated return of Mexican superstar and former world champion Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez, will finally occur as he takes on Angel Priolo at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

“Boxing fans have waited a long time to see Israel Vazquez back in action and we’re excited to have him headlining here in front of his hometown fans in Los Angeles,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.

“Israel is without question one of the best fighters in the world and he’s looking forward to proving himself once again in the coming months, beginning with this fight on October 10.”

Two-time junior featherweight world champion Israel Vazquez (43-4, 31 KOs) of Huntington Park, California had been a well-kept secret for much of his career, but after stoppages of Oscar Larios, Ivan Hernandez and Jhonny Gonzalez in 2005-2006, the boxing world quickly embraced him.

But it was the Mexico City native’s classic trilogy with Rafael Marquez in 2007-2008 that elevated “Magnifico” to superstardom in the fight game. Vazquez won two of the three bouts against Marquez leaving it all in the ring each time, proving he has the heart of a true warrior.

Although he has been sidelined since March of 2008 due to surgery for a detached retina, the 31-year-old Mexico City native has been cleared for battle and he’s ready to take on more challenges in a new weight class – featherweight.

Perennial contender Angel Priolo (30-7, 20 KO’s) has traded punches with the best in the business over the course of his professional career, including Abner Mares, Brian Viloria, Vernie Torres and Jose Nieves.

He’s looking to make another run at a world title and Barranquilla, Colombia’s Priolo knows that his road to the top will be shortened considerably should he upset Vazquez on October 10.

A co-featured bout and a full slate of undercard bouts will be announced shortly.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions, Espinoza Boxing Promotions and Sycuan Ringside Promotions, Vazquez vs. Priolo: “The Return” is a ten round featherweight fight that will headline an evening of world class boxing.

Tickets, priced at $200, $100, $75, $50 and $25, will go on sale on Friday, September 18 at 10am. To purchase tickets, please call 800-745-3000 or online at ticketmaster.com. Tickets may also be purchased starting Monday, September 21 at 9am at the Staples Center Box Office.

The fight will be broadcast on the HBO Plus service in Latin America beginning at 7pm local time (10pm ET). In a little over a year, HBO Plus’ “Next Boxing Generation” has established itself as the undisputed champion of televised boxing featuring the best Latino fighters in the world.
