Ben Whittaker Beats Conor Wallace After Late Fight Drama
Ben Whittaker won the main event on the cards, but Conor Wallace made the final round a real scramble. There were also title wins for Hamza Uddin, Bilal Fawaz, Ibraheem Sulaimaan and Aaron Bowen, while Odel Kamara made an emphatic start to his professional career.
Main Event
Ben Whittaker (13-0-1) controlled much of his WBC Silver light heavyweight fight with Conor Wallace (17-2-0) and took a unanimous decision after 12 rounds. For long stretches, Whittaker looked a level above.
Then Wallace went for it in the 10th. His late surge put Whittaker in trouble, and by the final round Whittaker was rocked and fighting to survive. He made it to the bell, but that was a much rougher ending than the earlier rounds had suggested.
Afterwards, Whittaker said he had found it too easy and switched off before getting caught. His trainer said Whittaker had Covid the previous week, a claim Wallace met with mocking laughter.
Co-Main / Key Fights
Hamza Uddin (8-0-0) stopped Sean Bruce (8-3-0) by TKO in the eighth round to claim the vacant British and Commonwealth flyweight titles. Bruce was down twice in the fifth and again in the eighth. Uddin stays unbeaten.
Chief supporting bout Odel Kamara (debut) ended with a third-round TKO win over Thodoris Ritzakis (5-5-1). Kamara went after knockout shots throughout, while Ritzakis had already been down once in the first. A memorable way to start a pro career.
Other Title Fights
Bilal Fawaz (13-1-1) stopped Eithan James (17-3-0) by TKO in the eighth round to take the British and Commonwealth super welterweight titles. Both men were cut in a fourth-round head clash, then James went down twice in the eighth.
Ibraheem Sulaimaan (12-0-0) beat Sonny Hardy (12-1-0) by unanimous decision after 10 rounds to win the English super featherweight title. Sulaimaan had a point deducted in the seventh for holding, but still kept his unbeaten record.
Aaron Bowen (9-1-0) handed Klinton Baptiste (5-1-0) his first defeat, winning a unanimous decision after 10 rounds for the Midlands Area super middleweight title. Baptiste finished with a swollen left eye.
Undercard
Adam Maca (7-0-0) kept his unbeaten record with a second-round TKO of Rogger Rivera (3-6-0).
Harley Burrows (3-0-0) also won by second-round TKO, stopping Matias Ezequiel Herrera (8-9-2).
Paige Murney (5-0-0) beat Linzi Buczynskyj (6-13-0) on points. Murney had a point deducted in the second round.
Whittaker got the win, but Wallace’s late attack is what people will be talking about. Both men were ready to run it back in a rematch, while Kamara’s debut was another one to remember.
