Boxing In Canada: Alcine, Ross Win In Montreal

Two big names in the great white north were in action last night as light middle Joachim Alcine and cruiserweight Troy Ross were victorious at The Casino in Montreal.

Alcine, 32-1 (19), is in the midst of a comeback after losing his WBA title to Daniel Santos last year, and faced experienced Frenchman Christophe Canclaux.

Ex-European Union beltholder Canclaux, 40-3 (25), rode a 15 bout win streak into Montreal and the hard-nosed 33 year old pressured Alcine from the start.

But Alcine proved to be a difficult man to get into the frame and the frustrated Canclaux lost a point for punching behind the head.

Alcine managed to stay out of trouble by showing fine footwork and countering skills as the visitor kept pressing forward. As the bout wore on, Alcine’s more accurate punching looked to be taking a toll on Canclaux but the Frenchman made it through the distance.

Alcine picked up the unanimous decision win by scores of 117-110 twice and 115-113, capturing the vacant WBO Intercontinental title.

Cruiserweight contender Troy Ross, 23-1 (16), won his 11th bout on the bounce, knocking out Brazil’s Daniel Bispo, 21-12 (15), at 1:12 of the very first round.

Lightweight Logan McGuinness, 9-0 (4), outpointed Mexican veteran Cesar Soriano, 20-25 (13), by scores of 80-71, 79-72 and 79-71 over eight rounds.
