Boxing Result: Valero Stops Velazquez In Venezuela

ByAlejandro Tostado 20/12/2009

Boxing superstar Edwin Valero was in rude form last night at Polideportivo Jose Maria Vargas in La Guaira, Venezuela, rocking the house during his first defense of the WBC lightweight crown.

Mexican veteran Hector Velazquez came into the bout sporting an iron chin and long experience against some of the best lighter weight men of the last ten years but it wasn’t enough.

Valero controlled the action throughout the contest, working out of a southpaw stance and dishing out his trademark brutal shots that have finished off every single opponents he’s ever faced as a professional.

Velazquez showed real toughness and heart, enduring the rain of leather and two bad cuts before deciding not to come out for the seventh frame.

Valero joins Manny Pacquiao and Robbie Peden as the only fighters to stop Velazquez over the last 12 years.

The 28 year old moves to a glittering 26-0 with 26 KO’s and could be heading into a series of title unification bouts in 2010 while Velazquez drops to 51-14-2 (35).
