Boxing In Ireland: Cuban Trio Ready To Dazzle Cork June 26

ByBoxing Press 16/06/201016/06/2010

Cork’s Cuban sensation’s Alexei Acosta, Luis Garcia and Mike Perez will be looking for a hat trick of wins on Saturday, June 26th when they look to extend their unbeaten records on the Yanjing Beer Fight Night at The Neptune Stadium in their adopted city.

The trio, are all World Junior Champions from the amateur ranks and look set for stiff tests on the night of “The Undefeated’s” when they team up with 3 of Ireland’s most exciting prospects, Andy Murray, Willie Casey and Gary O’Sullivan to bring a combined record to the ring of 65 wins (45 KO’s) and 0 defeats.

Super Middleweight Garcia and Heavyweight Perez will face American opposition is the shape of Demetrius Davis and Jason Barnett while Acosta will taken on Argentina’s Jose Saez with all three bouts scheduled for 8 rounds.

The experienced Davis is coming off a win over the previously undefeated Arthur Hein in Germany so he will be relishing an opportunity to return to Europe and spoil another unbeaten record.

However Garcia will be keen to build on his impressive recent form which has seen him keep busy by recording two wins in the past month, a points win over former European title challenger Alexander Sipos in Limerick and an impressive stoppage win over Welsh hard man Nathan King at The King’s Hall in Belfast last weekend.

“Davis is another good opponent for me and a good step in my career,” said the 22-year-old who’s record stands at 7 straight wins with 5 coming by KO. “The guys I have been fighting recently like Sipos and King are not pushovers and they are helping me to develop as a professional. I don’t want any easy fights, I want to try and step up every time with opponents who will test me and Davis has a lot of experience and comes with a good reputation.”

Mike Perez’s foe is another experienced American in the shape of Jason Barnett. Fresh from his historic two fights in one night on the Andy Lee undercard in Limerick last month the hard hitting southpaw will he hoping to chalk up another KO victory over Barnett, a former opponent of current European Heavyweight Champion, Audley Harrison.

The 35-year-old from Florida has hit something of a purple patch of late having scored consecutive KO wins over John Poore and snapping the undefeated record of Erik Leander.

Acosta will also face an examination of his championship credentials when he taken on former WBC Latino Super Bantamweight champ Jose Saez. The Argentinian went the distance with current IBF World Champ Steve Molitor just last November but Acosta has proved to be a big hitter in the professional ranks so far having won all 10 of his fights to date by KO.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
