Boxing In Britain: Fury Stops McDermott For English Title

Last night at Brentwood Centre in Brentwood, England, heavyweight Tyson Fury defeated arch-rival John McDermott in a rematch to capture the vacant English title.

The pair met last September at the same venue with Fury pulling out a highly controversial points verdict but this time opponent McDermott did not bring the same level of opposition.

Towering over McDermott by half a foot, the 6 foot 7 inch tall Fury controlled the pace of the bout in the early going behind a long jab that kept his Essex based rival at a distance.

McDermott chose not to get to grips with the younger man as he had done in their initial bout but rather bided his time until the hulking Fury ran out of gas.

That occurred by the middle rounds and McDermott seized the opportunity to attack Fury with both hands and soon the Manchester based giant was looking shaky from the punches.

But McDermott could not better his work and despite Fury losing a point in the seventh, the 22 year old northerner regrouped when it was the turn of his antagonist to run short of energy.

McDermott was knocked down in the eighth but beat the count. In the ninth, McDermott wasn’t so lucky as the Horndon veteran was downed twice more before the contest was called off at 1:08 of the frame.

With the win, Fury annexes the English crown for the second time and runs his record to 11-0 (9).

McDermott has now lost two fights to Fury after losing a pair to Danny Williams and falls to 25-7 (16).
