Boxing In Mexico: Garcia vs. Romero Tonight In Cancun

ByBoxing Press 30/07/2010

On Friday, July 30 at Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort in Cancun, Mexico, top prospects Danny Garcia and Jorge Romero meet in a clash of highly-regarded prospects that will see who takes the next step up the 140-pound ladder and who will be forced to regroup and rebuild.

It’s a pivotal bout for both young men, but only one can emerge victorious in the 10-round main event fight for the WBC Youth Welterweight Interim Title which will be broadcast throughout Latin America on HBO Plus’ “Next Boxing Generation” and on TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Also in action will be Mexican phenom Marco Antonio Periban, who squares off against Argentina’s Franco Raul Sanchez in an eight round light heavyweight bout.

A native of the fighting city of Philadelphia, 22-year-old Danny “Swift” Garcia (17-0, 11 KO’s) has made his hometown proud with 17 wins against increasingly tougher competition.

In 2010, he continued his rise towards the top of the junior welterweight division with victories over 25-3-1 Ashley Theopane and 28-fight veteran Christopher Fernandez, and on July 30 he’s got his sights set on another defining win.

Culiacan, Mexico’s Jorge Romero (17-2, 15 KO’s) has big shoes to fill when it comes to his city’s most famous boxing export, Julio Cesar Chavez, but with dynamite in his fists and a warrior’s heart, this 20-year-old is on the right path to big things in the fight game. Winner of six of his last seven bouts, with all victories coming by knockout, Romero has every intention of spoiling Garcia’s Mexico debut.

Mexico City’s Marco Antonio Periban (8-0, 5 KO’s) has had a lot of expectations placed upon his shoulders since turning pro in 2008 after a stellar amateur career, but the 25-year-old has passed all his tests in impressive fashion, leading many to dub him a future world champion. After three straight wins over unbeaten prospects in 2009-2010, Periban stopped 31-fight veteran Jason Naugler in June, notching his most notable win to date.

Standing in the corner opposite Periban will be rugged veteran Franco Raul Sanchez (12-6-2, 5 KO’s). A native of Cordoba, Argentina, the 30-year-old is currently on a four-fight winning streak that includes three straight first round knockouts, making it apparent that when he steps into the ring, he’s swinging for the fences.

“Next Boxing Generation”, which is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Producciones Deportivas de Ricardo Maldonado Jr. and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, will air live on the HBO Plus service in Latin America beginning at 10:00 pm ET time and on TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” broadcast in the United States at 11:30pm ET / PT (10:30pm CT). As the event is a private sponsored function, there will be no tickets for sale to the public.
