Boxing Preview: Soto vs. Munoz For WBC Belt In Mexico

WBC lightweight kingpin Humberto Soto leads the way on a good fight card tonight from Estadio Banorte in Culiacan, Mexico.

Soto, 52-7-2 (32), is making the third defense of the lightweight crown after retaining the WBC super feather strap on three occasions and at age 30, “La Zorrita” is at the height of his powers.

The Tijuana resident meets the challenge of the very tall 22 year old Colombian born Fidel Monterrosa Munoz, 23-1 (18), this evening and the bout shouldn’t be that much of a hurdle for Soto.

Despite a good numerical won-loss record, Munoz has only faced five opponents with winning resumes and lost a five round TKO to Ali Chebah for the NABF and WBC Youth light welter titles a year ago.

This one will likely not go the distance unless Munoz can really step up for the occasion as Soto is one of the best boxers in the world at any weight.

Mexico icon Jorge Arce, 55-6-1 (42), is also on the bill, climbing through the ropes with Lorenzo Parra, 31-2 (18), of Venezuela in a WBO super bantam title eliminator.

Arce held the WBC and WBO belts at light flyweight and the WBC at super fly but this is the first time “El Travieso” will fight as a super bantam.

Parra formerly wore the WBA flyweight crown and was stopped by Cellestino Caballero in the 12th round during a WBA super bantam title clash two years ago.

It will be interesting to see if Arce can make the transition to yeat another weight class but it won’t be easy as Parra is a seasoned operator.

Expect this one to go the distance and it’s a real 50-50 fight.
