Hatton Boxing: Roberts vs. Gachechiladze November 6
Rhys Roberts fights for his first championship next week, but insists he isn’t ready for the big-time yet.
The unbeaten Manchester hopeful challenges George Gachechiladze at Bury’s Castle Lesure Centre on Saturday November 6 for the vacant International Masters super-bantamweight title
Even though the part-time hairdresser is still learning his trade he expects to be a cut above his Georgian rival when they square off over ten rounds.
Roberts who has won all 11 professional fights said: “I am over the moon to get this chance and naturally believe that I will win.
“Winning my first title doesn’t mean I should be fighting the best in Britain because it is a very competitive division. I know I have a long way to go to make it.
“What I do know is that when I the time is right I will win major titles and defend them. I am not going to rush because I am young and have plenty of time.â€
Roberts, 21, trains at the famous Collyhurst and Mostons Lads club under the watchful eye of veteran trainer Brian Hughes and Pat Barrett.
Among the former kick boxing champion’s gym-mates is WBA international super-bantamweight champion Scott Quigg and their spars are beneficial to both.
Roberts explained: “We have been close since we were 15, and although we are a similar age Scott is ahead of me at the moment fight wise.
“Working alongside him every day is brilliant and our spars bring out the best in each other.â€
Gachechiladze, 23, has won six of his nine fights and coming off a career best win over previously unbeaten Mikheil Avakian.
The undercard will feature a number of upcoming British fighters including Salford’s female featherweight Maxine McCarthy.
The show is a Seconds Out Promotion and being filmed by Hatton Television.
