Golden Boy Boxing: Gonzalez, Periban, Huerta On Mexican Fight Card

ByBoxing Press 01/12/2010

On Friday, December 3, boxing fans will be treated to a doubleheader featuring two of Mexico’s top rising stars as Gilberto Gonzalez and Marco Antonio Periban as well as Paramount, California sensation Charles Huerta will see action in separate fights at the University of Guadalajara Olympic Coliseum in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

In the main event, lightweight Gonzalez meets Obregon City’s Noe Bolaños in a 10 round lightweight bout, while super middleweight prospect Periban will fight in an eight round co-feature against veteran Darnell Boone of Atlanta, Georgia. Opening this tripleheader will be an eight-round featherweight bout pitting Huerta against Guasave’s Arturo Camargo.

Currently riding an impressive seven fight winning streak, Mexico City’s Gilberto “Flaco” Gonzalez (18-1, 13 KO’s) is making his case as one of the fight game’s top 135-pound prospects. The current WBC Youth interim lightweight champion and Juan Manuel Marquez protégé, Gonzalez is finishing up a 2010 campaign that has seen him defeat four foes, and he hopes to close out the year in style this Friday night against Bolaños.

Hailing from Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, 24-year-old Noe Bolaños (21-5-1, 12 KO’s) is an explosive fighter who will give any super lightweight a rough night in the ring.

A seven-year professional who has squared off with former World Champion Vivian Harris and top contender Victor Manuel Cayo, Bolaños won the vacant WBC Mundo Hispano title with an eighth round stoppage of Carlos Urias in July. Bolaños expects a similar result when he faces young gun Gonzalez in Guadalajara.

Marco Antonio Periban (9-0, 6 KO’s) has fought all but two of his professional bouts in Mexico and the way he sees it, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

He’s 3-0 thus far in 2010, including a decision win over previously unbeaten Salomon Rodriguez, a fifth round technical knockout over respected veteran Jason Naugler and a three knockdown performance in stopping Franco Raul Sanchez in just two rounds. The former amateur star is gearing up for a big finish to the year, beginning with his December 3 bout in Guadalajara.

With his rugged style and iron chin, 30-year old Atlanta, Georgia resident Darnell Boone (17-16-3, 7 KO’s) has become a measuring stick against which rising stars are measured with an ability to frustrate even the most talented of up-and-comers. On December 3, Boone, whose last seven opponents owned a combined 91-1-1 record, has “upset” on his mind when he travels to Periban’s back yard.

Paramount, California featherweight standout Charles Huerta (15-1, 8 KOs’) has bounced back nicely from his lone pro loss in 2009, reeling off four wins in a row, including back-to-back knockouts of Jonathan Arias and Felipe Cordova in 2010.

This Friday, he makes his second professional appearance in Mexico when he faces Arturo Camargo (23-16-2, 20 KO’s). Camargo, a native of Guasave Sinaloa, Mexico, is a hard-hitting local favorite who has compiled an amazing 46 fight record despite being only 22 years old Who will be looking to pin the second set-back on Huerta’s record Friday night.

This evening of world class professional boxing is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Jorge Marron Productions. HBO Plus’ “Next Boxing Generation,” will air the tripleheader live on the HBO Plus service in Latin America beginning at 8:30pm local time. TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” will broadcast the Gonzalez vs. Bolaños fight in the United States at 11:30 pm ET / PT (10:30 pm CT).

Tickets priced at 70 pesos and 150 pesos are on sale now available for purchase at the University of Guadalajara Olympic Coliseum Box Office.

Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
