Boxing Result: Two Kamedas Win WBA Titles In Japan
There were two WBA title fights on Sunday at the Super Arena in Saitama, Japan with the Kameda brothers emerging victoriously.
Just 21 years of age, reigning WBA flyweight king Daiki Kameda made the second defense of his title, won in February during a rematch with Denkaosan Kaovichit, but was pushed hard by European Union beltholder Silvio Olteanu.
The Romanian challenger, over 10 years Kameda’s senior, brought an 11 bout win streak into Saitama, including a resounding UD over former European kingpin Bernard Inom and caused problems for the champion.
Olteanu took the fight to the champion, outworking Kameda from the start and never letting his foot off the gas pedal. Kameda had difficulty with this approach and preferred to look for openings.
But there were few of those as the challenger was in control of the pace for most of the rounds.
By the time 12 rounds had run their course, the champion was awarded the split decision victory, winning two cards by margins of 116-112 and 115-113 while the visitor won the third at 118-110.
Kameda runs his record to 19-2 (11) while Olteanu, who should get a rematch, drops to 11-4 (5).
The co-headlining clash saw ex-WBC flyweight and WBA light fly boss Koki Kameda annex the vacant WBA bantamweight crown with a UD over former WBA super fly ruler Alexander Munoz.
Munoz had won three straight coming into last night’s contest, had not fought at championship level for over two years and had a tough time keeping up with his southpaw adversary, at 24 years of age, seven years younger than Munoz.
Kameda almost struck paydirt when he downed Munoz in the 12th and final round but the experienced Colombian managed to survive long enough to hear the bell end the bout.
Kameda, 24-1 (15), wins a world title in his third weight class while Munoz drops to 35-4 (27).
In other action, a third Kameda, super bantam prospect Tomoki, 17-0 (12), won in explosive fashion by knocking out Thai southpaw Pichitchai Twins Gym, 17-12 (11), in the third frame.
