Golden Boy Boxing: Gonzalez vs. Gonzalez Kicks Off Solo Boxeo 2011 Debut

ByBoxing Press 05/01/2011

To kick off the 2011 boxing season, TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate,” returns with live boxing action for the first time ever at the Sports Center in Fairfield, California on Friday, January 7. In the main event, scheduled for eight rounds in the middleweight division, unbeaten Sacramento prospect Brandon Gonzales puts his perfect record on the line against San Diego’s Lester Gonzalez.

Also appearing on the 2011 premiere of “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” will be a junior welterweight bout featuring Fairfield’s own Alan Sanchez against Los Mochis Sinaloa, Mexico veteran Cristian Favela.

Born in Portland, Oregon but now making his home in Sacramento, 26-year-old Brandon Gonzales (13-0, 10 KO’s) is on the fast track in the middleweight division. A highly decorated amateur who earned a number one United States ranking in 2005, Gonzales entered the pro game in 2007 and has soared to a perfect record that includes ten knockouts. On January 7, he begins what he hopes will be the biggest year of his career.

A native of Havana, Cuba, southpaw Lester “El Cubanito” Gonzalez (11-1-1, 6 KO’s) has the skills to frustrate anyone at 160 pounds, and that’s just what he plans on doing to Brandon Gonzales this Friday. Unbeaten in 12 of 13 professional contests, the 33-year-old Gonzalez is looking to bounce back from a tough decision loss to talented prospect Chris Chatman last November with a nationally televised win over the unbeaten Gonzales.

Fairfield’s Alan Sanchez (5-2-1, 2 KO’s) started out fast in his professional career, winning his first four bouts. And though he’s only gone 1-2-1 in his last four, that slate includes a fifth round TKO of 11-0-1 Alberto Morales and an eight round draw with 10-0 Luis Enrique Grajeda in which he put the highly-touted prospect on the canvas twice. This Friday he expects to start off 2011 with a bang.

Name practically any top prospect of the last few years, and odds are that he has been tested by Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico’s Cristian Favela (28-30-7, 18 KO’s), a hard-nosed warrior who will fight anyone, anyplace, at any time. A professional since 1998, the 31-year-old Favela is coming off a second round knockout of Alfredo Valenzuela in October and he’d like to keep that winning streak going at the expense of Alan Sanchez.

Highlighting the action on a stacked undercard will be Fairfield featherweight prospect Manuel “Tino” Avila (1-0), who takes on Salvador Cefuentes (0-1) of Chula Vista in a four round fight. Avila is a former amateur star with nearly 50 wins who made his professional debut under last November with a shutout victory over Alexis Hernandez.

In a four round junior welterweight bout, Fairfield’s Luis Sanchez (0-4) will look for his first professional win against Jonathan Garcia (3-0, 2 KO’s) of Watsawville, Georgia. Also competing in a four round contest will be Fairfield heavyweight Lamont Williams (2-2, 1 KO) and Sacramento’s Hector Martinez (5-4, 4 KO’s).

Bkovah, Ukraine’s Ivan Redkach (6-0, 3 KO’s) will take on the vastly more experienced Jaime Orrantia (13-27-5, 4 KO’s) from Los Mochis Sinaloa, Mexico in a four round junior lightweight clash. Also in action will be unbeaten Vacaville lightweight Max Becerra (3-0-1, 2 KO’s) facing an opponent to be named in a four round fight.

This night of world-class professional boxing is presented by Don Chargin Productions and Golden Boy Promotions with matchmaking by Jorge Marron, local support from Paco Presents and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and AT&T. Doors open at 6:00pm PT, the first bell rings at 7:00pm PT and the TeleFutura broadcast begins at 11:30pm ET/PT (10:30pm CT). Fans at home can also be part of the action by voting for the fighter in the main event who displayed the most character during the telecast by sending a text message to 55333.

Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased by calling (530) 669-7946.

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Why was Usyk so bad? 27/05/2026
What was the major factor for Usyk to perform so poorly against Rico? Rico better than expected, skilled kick boxer, huge size, awkward style, surprise element? Age of Usyk finally showing up? Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
