Hennessy Boxing: Sammy Vargas Vs Tebor Brosch

ByBoxing Press 28/01/201102/02/2011

On February 19th, titles, bragging rights, and careers will be on the line at Mississauga’s Hershey Centre, in a card being called one of the most important in recent Canadian boxing history.

And in an evening packed with significant fights, including the first title defense of NABA lightweight champion Logan Cotton McGuinness, the North American return of former WBC junior welterweight world champion Junior Witter, two unheralded warriors are primed to steal the show

In a 10 round battle, undefeated welterweight prospect Sammy “El Producto” Vargas (7-0, 1 KO) looks to add his first professional title to his resume when he faces Canadian welterweight champion Tebor Brosch (6-3-4, 2 KO’s) for the NABA Canadian welterweight crown, in a fight that has Southern Ontario fight fans salivating.

With no amateur career to speak of, and only 6 pro fights on his resume, Vargas showed the world what he’s capable of when he ventured to Moncton New Brunswick last October and toppled the accomplished Jhonny Navarette (16-4-1, 8 KO’s) via unanimous decision.

And while that victory surprised many, Vargas’ trainer, the world-renowned Chris Johnson, saw it coming.

“Sammy shows me so much in the gym everyday, that nothing he accomplishes will ever surprise me,” Johnson said.

“He just showed Navarette, and the world, what I already know; that with hard work, and attention to detail, he can be a great fighter.”

But as bright as Vargas’ future is shaping up to be, he’ll be facing a fighter in Brosch desperate to keep a once bleak looking pro career on the upswing.

After just one win in his first seven pro fights, Brosch has done a complete one-eighty, going undefeated in his last seven, including a decision over Justin Fountain last July to claim the Canadian Welterweight title, and the confidence to succeed where he previously came up short.

“I now know what it takes to win in this sport. I know the price I have to pay, and, finally, how to pay it,” Brosch said.

“This is going to be a great fight. Sammy is a good fighter, with a very good trainer, and naturally they’re very confident. But you can say the same about me and my trainer Jerome Coffee.”

“Sammy is skilled, but far less experienced. I feel like I’m stronger, and that I have an answer for what he brings to the table.”

For promoter Adam Harris, of Hennessy Sports Canada, Vargas vs. Brosch is easily the most important fight of each man’s respective careers, and one that Vargas cannot take lightly.

“Sometimes, when you look to get a Canadian-based title, the pickings can be pretty easy,” said Harris said.

“But if Sammy wants to leave with that NABA Canadian belt, he’s going to have to pay the price against Tebor.”

“Brosch has overcome a very slow start to his career to become the Canadian welterweight champion. He earned that belt the hard way, and he’ll make sure if Sammy beats him on February 19th, it’ll be with everything he’s got.”

Tickets for the February 19th show at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, presented by United Promotions in association with Hennessy Sports, are available now starting at $25 at the Hershey Centre box office, or through Ticketmaster by calling (416) 872-5000 or logging onto www.ticketmaster.ca.

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
