Boxing Result: Trout Upsets Alvarez For WBA Crown In Mexico

American challenger Austin Trout went into opponent Rigoberto Alvarez’s hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico last night and walked out with the WBA light middleweight title belt around his waist after 12 rounds of action.

33 year old campaigner Alvarez had won the Interim version of the WBA bauble with a split decision verdict over lanky Japanese veteran Nobuhiro Ishida last October after losing shots at two regional belts.

25 year old challenger Trout had built up an undefeated record fighting out of Las Cruces, NM but to date had not faced any recognizable opponents and was the underdog going into last night’s clash.

But Trout’s quicker southpaw style gave Alvarez problems from the first bell and things never got better for the hard punching Mexican, who fell behind after ceding the initiative to his challenger.

Trout slowed down in the later frames but Alvarez couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity and the American finished off the night with a dominating 12th and final round.

Trout stayed undefeated as the scores were read, winning the WBA light middleweight title via margins of 119-108 on all three cards, improving to 22-0 (13),. Alvarez falls to 26-3 (19).

The chief support bout saw Jesus Silvestre, 20-2 (16), knock out Yader Escobar, 23-4 (15), in the fourth round of a WBA title eliminator.
