Boxing In Germany: WBA Kingpin Sturm In Action Tonight In Stuttgart

ByHermann Helmut 18/02/201118/02/2011

Making his first appearance in the ring thus far this year will be Felix Sturm, looking to retain his WBA middleweight crown against contender Ronald Hearns tonight at Porsche Arena in Stuttgart.

For Cologne’s Sturm, this bout has a familiar ring to it as Hearns, like every other opponent Sturm has defended against during three world title reigns, with the exception of Oscar De La Hoya, isn’t quite world class opposition.

And ironically, Sturm, 34-2-1 (14), arguably defeated De La Hoya in 2004 despite losing the decision on the cards but has yet to again face a top drawer opponent.

Nevertheless, tonight’s clash against Hearns, 26-1 (20), won’t likely be a walkover as the American tourist’s height and punching power could cause Sturm trouble if the champion doesn’t employ all of his considerable skill.

Also, Hearns has mainly fought as a light middle for the last four years and at 6’3, the return to middleweight could possibly improve his strength, stamina and punch resistance.

But make no mistake, this is Sturm’s fight to lose and if he does want to participate in higher profile unification matches, he’ll have to look impressive in tonight’s contest.
