Golden Boy Boxing: Santa Cruz, Periban Featured In Mexico Fight Card

ByBoxing Press 3/20/2011

Televisa’s “Sabados De Corona” sets down in Xalapa, Veracruz, on Saturday, March 26, as Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions present a doubleheader of unbeaten Mexican stars Leo Santa Cruz and Marco Antonio Periban in their toughest tests to date at Museo Interactivo de Xalapa.

Headlining the event will be Michoacan’s Santa Cruz, who battles Belgium’s Stephane Jamoye in a 12 round clash for the WBC Youth bantamweight title. In the co-main event, Mexico City’s Periban squares off against Colombia’s Oney Valdez in a ten round super middleweight bout.

The brother of former World Champion Jose Armando Santa Cruz, 22-year-old Leo Santa Cruz (14-0-1, 6 KO’s) is rapidly ascending the bantamweight ladder on the way to what he hopes will be his own world championship.

A talented fighter who can box or bang, Santa Cruz has opted for the latter in his recent bouts, as he is currently riding a four-fight knockout streak that he hopes to extend in Xalapa on March 26.

Liege, Belgium native, Stephane Jamoye (20-2, 10 KO’s) has already held the WBC Youth and European Union bantamweight championships in a whirlwind career that began in 2007. The 21-year-old is no stranger to working on the road, as he’s fought in Mexico, Spain and the U.K. in recent years. On the 26th Jamoye will look to be the fighter who introduces Santa Cruz to the loss column.

In February, Mexico City’s Marco Antonio Periban (11-0, 8 KO’s) was expected to be pushed to the limit by then-undefeated top prospect Dion Savage, but with frightening precision, it only took Periban 33 seconds to dispatch his foe for his 11th professional win and third first round knockout. On March 26, the 26-year-old rising star will attempt to repeat his last performance and take down the experienced Oney Valdez.

A 14-year veteran who knows all the tricks of the fight game, 36-year-old Barranquilla, Colombia native Oney Valdez (22-10-1, 16 KO’s) has the experience to baffle any opponent and the power to send them to defeat. Winner of six of his last seven fights, including three consecutive first round knockouts, Valdez is proving himself to be a late bloomer in the fight game and a dangerous opponent for Periban.

A full undercard will be announced shortly.

This night of world class boxing is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona. On fight night, doors open at 6:30 PM CST, the first bell rings at 7:30 PM CST and the Televisa broadcast begins at 10:30pm CST.

Tickets, priced at 100, 200, 300 and 500 pesos are available for purchase at Tiendas Fasti, Deportes Marti, Injuver Boca del Rio, Injuver Xalapa and Injuver Estatal.

  • Callum Smith injured 4/7/2026
Callum Smith has pulled out of the David Morrell fight which was due to take place in his hometown Liverpool on 18rh April. I was looking forward to this fight. Ben Whittaker will be headlining the event now. talksp […]
  • Errol Spence v Tim Tszyu - June 2026 4/7/2026
The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]

  • Devin Haney vs Rolly Romero collapses 4/3/2026
Negotiations for a WBO and WBA welterweight unification clash between Devin Haney and Rolly Romero have reportedly collapsed. Organisers had planned for the fight to headline a PBC event on May 30, live on Amazon Prime PPV. Haney has turned down the fight. The reason for Haney pulling the plug is that he wasn’t offered a guaranteed purse. PBC instead propose […]
  • Rene Santiago to defend his WBA and WBO junior flyweight belts in Japan 4/2/2026
Rene’s not talked about much. Even here in Puerto Rico he’s not as well known as Xander Zayas or even Oscar Collazo. But he’s got 2 of the 4 belts in the division, and tonight he defends them against Masataka Taniguchi in Japan. Gotta hand it to him. This is his 3rd straight fight in Japan. I admire any fighter who’s willing to go halfway around the world to […]
