Boxing Result: Kameda Retains WBA Bantam Title In Japan

WBA bantam boss Koki Kameda has been successful in the first defense of his title, belting out challenger Daniel Diaz this evening at Prefectural Gymnasium in Osaka, Japan.

Osaka born southpaw Kameda, who won the title with a decision over Alexander Munoz last December, established his control of the bout from the first bell with a clear edge in skill and ability.

Nicaragua’s Diaz had won a NABA belt on 2007 but had largely faced obscure competition before this evening aside from a loss in 2009 to WBC title challenger Alvaro Perez and did not appear to be ready for his first world title challenge.

The popular Kameda used good footwork and crisp combinations to stay ahead of his taller challenger, who wasn’t able to keep pace with the champion.

In the second half of the bout, Kameda started to slow down and Diaz was able to get closer and had some success on the inside.

But Kameda regrouped and began to batter Diaz in the later rounds. The 11th frame was particularly bad for the challenger and his corner decided against letting their fighter out for the 12th round.

Kameda, who also held the WBC flyweight and WBA light fly crowns, improves to 25-1 (6). Diaz falls to 18-3 (13).

Chief support was provided by a OPBF super feather title clash in which previously undefeated reigning champ Masao Nakamura, 12-1 (12), who had halted every opponent he’d faced as a professional, was stopped in the first round by Filipino southpaw Ronald Pontillas, 12-3-3 (6).

Bantam prospect Tomoki Kameda, 19-0 (12), Koki’s brother, won a wide ten round points verdict against Nathan Bolico, 10-3-1 (4).
