Quigg Headlines Hometown Fight Card July 23

ByBoxing Press 18/05/2011

Scott Quigg is preparing for his final contest in hometown Bury until he becomes a world champion.

The fastest rising star in British boxing will defend his WBA intercontinental super-bantamweight title in his hometown at Castle Leisure Centre on Saturday July 23.

A boxing ban in Bury was lifted last year so that Quigg could fight in his backyard, but success has meant outgrowing local venues. His promoter Ricky Hatton believes that one day Quigg will be fighting Bury’s Gigg Lane football ground and defending a world title.

Quigg, 22, has won all 21 professional contests and the British Boxing Board of Control has made him the official challenger for Jason Booth’s British 8st 10lb title.

Hatton said: “This is the last time Scott will box a small hall show for some time, so it will be a great occasions with a spine-tingling atmosphere.

“We could have had this fight on one of our televised cards, but Bury Council have been fantastic and the fans amazing so we owed it them to bring another of Scott’s fights to the town.

“Hatton Promotions have a reputation for high quality shows and I want fans to go home remembering this one for a long time.”

Quigg will be making his second defence of the title he won against Santiago Allione last September and his overseas opponent will be named in the next couple of weeks.

The BBB of C have ordered his fight against Booth to take place by the end of September and purse bids will be opened on June 8 and Hatton Promotions are confident of winning the bid.

Hatton added: “The Booth fight is a great opportunity for Scott to wear a Lonsdale belt, but he will not have an easy test in July. Scott is already world class and I don’t need easy fights for the sake of it.”

Despite no official announcement of Quigg’s Bury brawl tickets are close to selling out more than two months before the big day.

The last few priced £75(VIP Ringside), £55 (Ringside) and £35 General admission www.brandhatton.com or 0844 847 2500/0161 775 7500.
