Trout Keeps WBA Title In Mexico Against Lopez

Light middleweight Austin Trout once again traveled to Mexico where he retained his WBA title with a competitive decision victory over veteran David Lopez.

Trout had to overcome a packed house of the challenger’s faithful following at Auditorio Miguel Barragan in San Luis Potosi, just as he was faced with doing when he won the world title in February in Guadalajara.

Lopez brought the experience of having faced more seasoned competition than Trout and the challenger brought a great deal of pressure to bear from the first round.

The champion was much faster of hand and foot than Lopez and was able to counter the challenger consistently, however Lopez was able to land some good power shots from the outside, which Trout proved able to take.

Trout used the ring well and was able to effectively clinch the challenger anytime Lopez managed to close the distance, preventing the taller, stronger Mexican from carrying out his strategy.

The 11th frame was the most eventful round of the bout with both fighters on the canvas although Trout’s was ruled a slip and Lopez’s was ruled a legitimate knockdown although it appeared that the opposite was the case.

In the end, Trout was awarded a unanimous decision on very generous scoring of 119-109, 118-109 and 117-110 after 12 rounds.

The American improves to 23-0 (13) while Lopez sees a 16 fight win streak come to an end and now stands at 40-13 (23).

In the support bout of the card, Ana Marie Torres, 25-3-3 (15), impressively kept hold of her WBC Female super fly title by crushing challenger Vannessa Guimaraes, 9-4 (8), in the fourth round.

Mexico City based Torres has now defended eight times since regaining the green belt in 2009.
