None other than the venerable Michael Katz (the man responsible for the infamous monikers “Chicken Kiev” and now “Duck Kiev”) weighed in prominently on the Vitali Klitschko debacle today at MaxBoxing.com:
Let me try and not go on another rant against the silly Ring magazine “titles,” but if Vitali Klitschko takes on Brock or Toney instead of his mandatory, there should be little question that the WBC will strip him, and for good reason. Klitschko kept Rahman from earning a living while claiming injury after injury, and if he doesn’t fight him, or Barrett, next, the sanctioning body SHOULD strip him.
But of course, Big Brother could go on fighting Oleg Maskaev over and over, in between years off for jogging, and the Ring in its self-anointed holiness would never do anything like punish a guy for punishing an entire division. I don’t need the Ring to tell me Bernard Hopkins is the middleweight champion or Antonio Tarver is the real light-heavyweight champion or Ricky Hatton took the junior welterweight title from Kostya Tszyu. Nor do I want a couple of Ring editors telling me that Vitali Klitschko was ever the real heavyweight champion for beating Corrie Sanders.
Vitali is proving to be nothing more than Duck Kiev, looking to fight Danny Williams and that ilk, while suspiciously getting out of fighting Rahman – a man until the ducks lined up in a row I would have thought would have had little chance against the Ukrainian giant because of his suspicious chin.
