Wonjongkam Retains WBC Crown Over Sosa In Thailand

Earlier today at the outdoor 11th Infantry Regiment Arena in Bangkok, WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam posted a hard fought 12 round unanimous decision over seasoned Mexican visitor Edgar Sosa.

Participating in the 87th professional fight of his amazing career, Wonjongkam would be making the third defense of his second WBC reign, three years after his streak of 17 WBC title defenses was ended.

Sosa came into the clash as the WBC International strapholder, two years after his streak of nine WBC light flyweight title defenses was halted and the 32 year old Mexico City was a genuine threat to the 34 year old Thai champion.

Wonjongkam put pressure on the smaller Sosa from the start, following up the jab from the start with winging power left hands both upstairs and down but Sosa was undeterred, digging in rights between the champion’s guard and left hooks to the body.

Sosa enjoyed a handspeed advantage, which allowed him to jab accurately, but had an increasingly difficult time landing meaningful punches on the awkward, slipping defensive style on Wonjongkam as the rounds wore on.

As Sosa increased his workrate he started to find openings for the right but was also taking counter right hooks from the champion, who also was successful charging in to land long hard lefts.

From the midway point on, Wonjongkam took control, using his sharp southpaw boxing skills to win countless exchanges with the willful challenger.

Sosa never stopped trying to wrest the belt from his Thai adversary, fighting thru cuts and showing a great heart but aside from a good 12th round, was never in the driver’s seat after the early going.

When the scores were read, Wonjongkam was declared the winner on all three cards by marks of 117-110, 117-110 and 116-111, updating his resume to a prolific 83-3-1 (45).

Sosa drops to 43-7 (26), losing for just the second time in his last 33 appearances.
