Toney Suspension Lifted.

ByBoxing Press 25/07/2005

Heavyweight fighter James Toney, who lost his WBA title after a post-fight urine test revealed traces of steroids, will be eligible to return to the ring on July 30 after serving out his suspension. The New York State Athletic Commission suspended Toney for 90 days and ordered him to pay a $10,000 (€8,200) fine after he tested positive for nandrolone following his victory over defending champ John Ruiz on April 30. “James Toney has fulfilled his obligation to the New York State Athletic Commission,” NYSAC chairman Ron Stevens said on Thursday. “As such, Mr. Toney’s suspension will be lifted effective July 30, 2005, as mandated by the New York commission’s previous order.” Toney won the World Boxing Association title by unanimous decision over Ruiz, but the NYSAC changed the victory to a no contest on May 11 after the positive test. Ruiz, who had retired after the loss, was given back the championship belt.
