Ken Egan Wins Big At Dublin’s National Stadium

ByBoxing Press 22/01/2012

Ken Egan booked his ticket into his 12 consecutive Elite Championships semi-final with a third round stoppage of fellow Dubliner Michael Frayne at the National Stadium last night.

The Neilstown BC southpaw was 24-9 up when Frayne, who took two counts in the first, took a third standing count 12 seconds from the final bell and the bout was stopped.

Ten-time Elite champion Egan will now meet Eamon Walsh in the last-four next weekend, while Davey Joe Joyce will face European and current Elite champion Joe Ward in the corresponding light-heavyweight semi-final.

Walsh beat Cork’s Patrick O’Shea tonight and Joyce edged out Sean Allen by a single point.

Earlier yesterday, European light-welterweight champion Ray Moylette crashed out of the tournament following a 15-11 loss to Dubliner Martin Wall.

In was a good day for the St Michael’s Athy club with Eric Donovan, David Oliver Joyce, Roy Sheahan and John Joe Joyce all winning their quarter-finals.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny was amongst those at the National Stadium enjoying the action at the home of Irish boxing on Saturday afternoon.

The 2012 Elite Championships continue next weekend with semi-finals on Friday and Saturday.
