Vazquez Retains IBF Crown Against Diaz In Mexico

Last night at Coliseo Olimpico de la UG in Guadalajara, Mexico, local hero Miguel Vazquez defended his IBF lightweight title against the challenge of Ameth Diaz via a wide points verdict.

Vazquez was putting his IBF strap at risk for the third time since winning it against Ji Hoon Kim in 2010 and the bout with Diaz came only after several postponements.

Diaz was participating in his first world title bout and was coming off a career best win that saw the Panamanian halt highly touted Australian Lenny Zappavigna in an IBF title eliminator this past August.

But this was to be no Cinderella story for the Panama City man, who struggled from the first bell last night to deal with the iron-clad defense of the champion.

After getting the measure of the challenger, Vazquez went to work and put on a clinic for the remained of the contest, schooling Diaz at every turn.

None of the rounds were close and Diaz’s shot at the limelight finished without ever troubling Vazquez, who was awarded a 120-107, 119-108, 119-108 unanimous decision.

Vazquez improves to 30-3 (13) with his ninth consecutive victory while Diaz falls to 30-11 (21).

On the undercard, 20 year old local welterweight slugger Daniel Sandoval, 24-2 (24), knocked out yet another opponent, finishing off Juan Jesus Rivera, 9-7 (6), in the second round.
