Juan Carlos Burgos Wins WBC Silver

ByRobert Brizel 28/02/2012

In the ESPN2 main event of a fight card held at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, Delaware, on Friday, February 24, 2012, Juan Carlos Burgos won the WBC Silver Super Featherweight title with a questionable ten round unanimous decision over former IBF World Featherweight champion Cristobal Cruz. EPSN2 commentator, Teddy Atlas scored the bout 96-95 for Cruz, in contradiction to the judges official scorecards.

The bout was fought as a center of the ring punch and counterpunch war. Burgos attempting to exploit height and reach advantage to score jabs, while Cruz came forward with pressure, fighting on the inside to go toe-to-toe and score jab points. Cruz often came forward swinging wide with his counters, exposing himself.

An inside uppercut by Burgos dropped Cruz for a 10-8 sixth round. Cruz came back to drop Burgos to his knees with a short powerful left in the ninth for a 10-8 round and leave the bout on the table in the tenth and final round. Burgos doubled Cruz over with a left hook low blow in the tenth, forcing a stop in the action by referee Gary Rosato.

Both fighters hail from Tijuana Baja California Mexico. Cruz, 24, saw his record rise to 29-1 (19). Ex-IBF champ Cruz, 34, fell to 39-13-3 (23).
