Price vs. Sexton British Heavyweight Fight Details Announced

Today it has been confirmed that Liverpool’s David Price and Norwich’s Sam Sexton’s clash for the vacant British and Commonwealth Heavyweight titles has been confirmed for the 19th May at the Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool.

The Equestrian Centre forms part of Aintree Horse Racing Racecourse, which will host it’s first fight night after being a venue to host boxing by the British Boxing Board of Control. .

This announcement was made today by Price’s promoter Frank Maloney, who had won the purse bids to stage the fight following the decision by Tyson Fury to vacate both titles, following Price’s elevation to mandatory challenger after his spectacular one round blowout of Horndon’s John McDermott at the Olympia in Liverpool. This is despite Fury’s claim of Price turning down the attractive sum of £100,000 to fight him by his promoter Mick Hennessy.

The date of May has been chosen as Price is currently scheduled to make his American debut against the Frenchman Josue Blocus on the 24th of this month in Atlantic City, which is on the undercard of Polish Heavyweight Mariusz Wach’s clash with the big hitting American Tye Fields for the WBC International Heavyweight title.

The stateside fight is an opportunity to demonstrate why Price has been talked about as not only as one of the best British prospects, but also one of the best Heavyweight prospects currently fighting in the world since turning professional after winning the Bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics at Super Heavyweight four years ago.

The Sexton fight gives Price the opportunity to achieve his goal of becoming the first fighter from the great fight city of Liverpool to win the British Heavyweight title, which no heavyweight from Liverpool has achieved since the prestigious British Heavyweight title was created in 1905 when Jack Palmer fought Geoffrey Thorne at the National Sporting Club at Covent Garden in London.

Palmer knocked out Thorne in the fourth round of a scheduled 20 round contest, and the knowledgeable fight fans of Liverpool who will pack out the Aintree Equestrian Centre will be hoping that Price shall do the same in his challenge for the Lonsdale belt.
