A Close Look At David Haye vs. Dereck Chisora

ByTam Seddon 22/05/2012

The domestic British heavyweight scene has really picked up in 2012, and there is an upcoming clash that offers plenty of suspense.

David Haye- Derrick Chisora has been announced at Upton Park on the 14th of July, which by many fans is seen to be highly controversial due to the circumstances of the showdown in Germany, however as a British boxing fan you have to be getting a little bit excited for this one.

Both men certainly have big egos and we got a taste of that in the post press conference, and it certainly has got me intrigued into how this fight would pan out in the ring. In my personal opinion, I think promoter Frank Warren has got bottle organising this fight, with all of the controversies with theBBBO’C and no doubt there is going to be a lot of stick for this fight.

On the flip side though, I think you have to give the man some credit for actually going down with this contest, because as a boxing fan I think this bout really does bring some excitement to the domestic and world scene.

Both Haye and Chisora come to fight and no doubt we are going to see a war, come July 14th. I personally have been quite impressed with Derrick Chisora in his last couple of outings. I thought he was particularly unlucky against Robert Helenius in Finland, last December.

Chisora certainly knew that this was make or break for him as Helenius was seen to be a true threat to the Klitschko brothers. Chisora, on the other hand, showed up in good shape and highly motivated, which was the complete opposite to how he performed during the Tyson Fury showdown, which in my opinion was an embarrassment on Chisora’s behalf.
I had Chisora winning the Helenius fight, it was a bit closer on my card than some boxing fans had it however, Chisora impressed and I think he deserved his shot at VitaliKlitschko after losing his opportunity previously to face Wladimir Klitschko.

I think, based on ring performance, Chisora has shown the boxing world that he is a top ranked contender. I thought he madeVitali get into a true fight and that was really promising to see. I thinkVitali was really pushed in the fight and I think
Vitali did not anticipate such a live challenge.

However, Vitali did show us that he still is top dog and he beat Chisora in an action packed fight. He certainly looked tired though and has shown us that there is slight vulnerability in this later stage of his career.

It can’t go unnoticed, obviously, about the controversial behaviour from Chisora, which in my opinion was not good to see. Obviously, I am not Chisora so I do not know what his motives were for doing that, I think he has shown the boxing world that he needs to put unprofessionalism outbursts behind him because I believe Chisora brings a lot to the table in the heavyweight division.

I personally believe Frank Warren has secured one of the biggest fights to be made in 2012. I think the Upton Park Card, with Kevin Mitchell also on it, is going to be a truly fantastic night for British boxing as a fan I am really getting exited for this.

I think there will be a lot of criticism about the fight but Warren is the one who will have to deal with it. As a fan, I am certainly going to be watching this one, controversies aside, this is one that no doubt is going to bring a lot of drama and really will be a highly action packed fight.

David Haye was not impressive against Wladimir Klitschko and that certainly was a let-down as a boxing fan. I personally thought Haye would have been up to the challenge and no doubt he does have the skills to actually put on a performance against Wladimir.

To see him not execute his original pre-fight game plan in the ring was disappointing but if he truly was put off by his injury, then who knows? I think Haye does need to put to bed that outing with Chisora in Germany because I feel, with his attitude, he has been the laughing stock of the heavyweights at the moment.

However, Haye, in my opinion, is a highly talented fighter and no doubt he is ranked within the top five in the heavyweights in the world right now. I think he has a chance, controversy aside, to really make an impact in the heavyweight division against Chisora.

Haye brings speed into this fight and explosiveness and he is going to have to be prepared to go toward Chisora for 12 rounds if he wants to get a decision because Chisora has shown us that he has enough in the tank to go the full 12 rounds.

This is what is going to make it an exciting fight, because I believe Chisora has shown the boxing world that he belongs in the ring with Haye. Chisora is going to have to box like he did against Vitaliand do more if he wants to win against Haye.
I feel that Chisora has to take the experience that he has gained from the Vitali fight and apply it to the the Haye fight. The way that Chisora is going to beat Haye is if he applies pressure from the start and tries to end the fight late. I think a lot of the rounds are going to be heated exchanges and it will be a case of who wants it more.

At this moment in time I am leaning toward Haye to put on a boxing performance and win a close but exciting decision, with Chisora remaining solid but Haye’s boxing ability will be the difference. In saying this though, there needs to be no excuses from Haye and he needs to bring his A game if he wants to win this.

Chisora has shown us that he has the ability to push world class heavyweights to their limits and this is the test I believe Haye needs to put his name up there again with the very best in the heavyweight division.

It is make or break for Haye, in my opinion. If he impresses here who knows what the future holds for him? I personally believe the Klitschko brothers will not want any part of Haye after his attitude of late, but as a boxing fan if Haye puts on a strong performance here I personally would love to see Haye vs. Vitali Klitschko for Vitali’s last fight.

Going off Vitali’s performance against Chisora, one would think that Haye might have a chance if he can defeat Chisora. I believe an in-form Haye would be a true threat to any heavyweight around at the moment. It is whether or not Haye has the right mind-set to do it and is fully fit.

I hope he stays injury free and puts on a performance against Chisora and moves on. I think Haye vs. Vitaliwould be a massive showdown, but Haye certainly has a lot of redeeming to do to earn that fight and it starts by putting on a professional performance against Chisora and show the British public that he is deserves the fight and no doing anything out of character against Chisora.

I think Haye owes it to the British public to be strictly professional in this bout, with the controversy with the BBB’OC I think this fight needs to make the correct headlines for a great potential heavyweight clash instead of the incorrect headlines that we have seen between these two fighters, which is not what you want to see in British boxing.

I think rightfully so the BBB’OC is angry with the attitudes of both Haye-Chisora and they are right in not granting the licence of Chisora. I believe Chisora does need punishing for what he has done, however he needs to learn from his mistakes and be professional himself and really push Haye to the limits. This is what will make the fight really exciting to watch, as I believe both of their styles will be good to watch.

I just hope that both men are professional in this controversial fight because it is no doubt the fight the British boxing fans want to see, in my opinion. We will have to see, I just hope they do not make a mockery of themselves and the sport again because what happened in Germany was not good to see.

No doubt it certainly has spiced up this showdown, and it has made this fight more attractive in ways, but it certainly was not good to see.

I just hope both me show up and are in shape for this one and are professional. However, as I was saying before, both men have big egos so who knows? We might see them clash again. For both of their sakes, career wise, I hope they don’t clash again for the wrong reasons, but for the right reasons, in the ring to truly settle the score.

This is why Frank Warren has made this fight in my opinion and I do have to give him credit for doing this. There will no doubt be a lot of criticism for this going through, but politics aside I think this is going to be a great night for British heavyweight boxing.
